Quest’anno tutto il sudest asiatico è stato interessato da una siccità che ha davvero messo in difficoltà le attività e la vita della gente delle campagne. Anche gran parte della Cambogia è stata investita dalla siccità e l’area rurale di Kep dove è collocato il nostro Centro Diurno, non ha fatto eccezione. / This year South East Asia has been hit by a serious drought that made even more difficult the activities and the life of people in the countryside. Also a large part of Cambodia was hit by the drought and the rural area of Kep, where our Day Center is located, was no exception.

Già lo scorso anno il monsone era arrivato con quasi un mese di ritardo, dopo l’inizio di giugno. Il nostro pozzo aveva retto e continuato a dare acqua fino alla metà di maggio. Quest’anno il pozzo era già secco a marzo, tanto che è stata fatta una raccolta fondi per poter trivellare una nuova pompa che scendendo più in profondità consenta di dare acqua con maggiore regolarità al nostro Centro. Grazie in particolare alla sensibilità e generosità di alcuni amici abbiamo potuto mettere in preventivo l’investimento di 1.500 dollari per il nuovo pozzo. / Last year the monsoon arrived almost one month late, after the beginning of June. Our well made it up to the half of May to provide water for the Center. This year the well was already dry in march, so there was a specific fundraising to dig a deeper well in order to install a new pump that should provide water for the Center on a regular basis. Thanks in particular to the generosity of some friends we were able to fund the investment for the new well for a total of 1,500 US dollars.

I nostri volontari che avevano visitato il Centro tra gennaio (Jane Hartley) e marzo (Stefania, Daniele, Claudia e Davide) avevano trovato una situazione in continuo peggioramento. La fornitura di acqua filtrata proveniente dal vecchio pozzo e disponibile per i bambini era andata diminuendo fino ad esaurirsi completamente alla metà di marzo.  / Our volunteers that visited the Center between January (Jane Hartley) and March (Stefania, Daniele, Claudia and Davide) found a situation rapidly deteriorating. The availability for the children of filtered water coming from the old well  decreased day by day and came to a complete stop by the middle of March.

Il nostro staff a Kep ha dovuto ricorrere a soluzioni di emergenza sia con contenitori di acqua minerale sia con forniture straordinarie di acqua reperita in altre zone della provincia. / Our staff in Kep was forced to adopt extraordinary measures and buy water either in big bottles or with water supplies coming from other parts of the Province.

Quando è partito il progetto per l’installazione della nuova pompa, abbiamo dovuto aspettare il nostro turno, dato che i tecnici che si occupano della trivellazione erano impegnati nella perforazione di pozzi prioritariamente destinati ai contadini per la coltivazione e alle famiglie dell’area rurale. / When the project for the new pump was lauched, we had to wait our turn, since the technicians that operate the drilling were busy making new wells with priority for farmers and families of the surrounding rural area.

Quando è arrivato il nostro turno alla fine di maggio, purtroppo, o forse meglio, per fortuna il monsone è finalmente arrivato, riempiendo in breve tempo di acqua le risaie che stanno tutto intorno al nostro Centro. Progetto rimandato alla conclusione della stagione delle piogge. La strada di accesso al nostro Centro è troppo piccola per il passaggio dei camion con le attrezzature e passare nelle risaie non è più possibile. / When our turn came at the end of May, unfortunately, or maybe better, luckily the monsoon finally arrived, in a very short time filling with water all the rice fields that are all around our Center. Consequenlty the project must be postponed to the end of the rainy season. The road that gives access to our Center is too small to allow the passage of the trucks that transport the drilling machines and the passage in the rice field is now impossible.

Ma finalmente la tanto attesa acqua che dà la vita è arrivata. E tutti tiriamo un sospiro di sollievo. / But the long awaited water that gives life finally arrived. And we all can have a sigh of relief.
