E’ la mia ultima sera a Kep, per questa volta. Anche questo viaggio è volato via tra mille cose da fare, nonostante le promesse fatte a me stesso che me la sarei presa un po’ più comoda delle altre volte. / My last evening in Kep, at least for this visit. As usual this trip has flown by, with a thousand things to do, despite the promises I made to myself that I would have taken it easier this time than on previous visits.
Ma sono sereno. Sono state due settimane intense, come previsto, nelle quali ho ancora una volta rinnovato il legame con questa terra, con questa gente. / But I’m serene. They have been two very intense weeks, as foreseen, in which I have once more renewed my ties to this land and these people.
Stasera qui c’è un concerto pazzesco di tutto il mondo animale che può gracchiare, cinguettare e fare tutti i rumori e i versi possibili e immaginabili. Quasi che sapessero che me ne vado e volessero farsi sentire di più, questa sera. E’ davvero impressionante e quasi assordante. / This evening here there is a crazy concert of all the animals in the world that can croak ,whistle and make all the noises and sounds possibly imaginable. It’s almost as if they know I am leaving and want to make themselves heard even more this evening. It’s impressive and almost deafening.
Ieri sera il finimondo, con acqua a secchiate e tuoni e fulmini. Ad un certo punto stava quasi diventando preoccupante. / Last night was like the end of the world, with bucketful’s of water, thundering and lightning. At one point it was getting quite worrying.
Infatti stamattina la strada da Kep verso il Centro, in vari punti era allagata. Per non parlare poi dei campi che la costeggiano, trasformati in una notte in veri e propri stagni con mezzo metro d’acqua. Per fortuna, un po’ inaspettatamente, la strada sterrata che dalla provinciale porta al nostro villaggio, è sgombra da grosse pozze, anche se le stradine laterali che si inoltrano nei campi sono piene d’acqua. Mentre arrivo a destinazione intravedo una famiglia intera intenta a pescare nel canale a poca distanza dal nostro Centro, ingrossato all’inverosimile dalle piogge della nottata. / In fact, this morning, the Kep road going to the Center was flooded in some places. Without mentioning the fields along the roadside, transformed, overnight, into ponds with about half a metre of water. Fortunately, and unexpectedly, the tarmacked main road that leads to our village doesn’t have really big puddles, even though the side roads that lead into the fields are full of water. On the way I see whole families intent on fishing in the canals near our Center, incredibly overflown from last night’s rain.
Quando arrivo al Centro Sokkea mi dice che ci sono pochi bambini, perchè diverse case sono allagate e i bambini hanno problemi a muoversi. Intanto sono già in corso tutti i preparativi per la Khmer Curry Soup, con la quale tutti insieme festeggeremo. / When I get to the Center Sokkea tells me there aren’t many children because some of the houses are flooded and the children have trouble moving. In the meantime preparation of the Khmer Curry Soup we are going to share all together to celebrate, is already underway.
Pian piano nel corso della mattinata i bambini arrivano. Nessuno vuole mancare l’occasione di un piatto così ghiotto. E poi Sokkea li ha già messi all’opera per scrivere gli auguri di Natale agli sponsor del SAD. / Slowly, slowly during the morning the children arrive. Nobody wants to miss the occasion of such a tasty meal. .Sokkea has also set them to writing Christmas greetings for the SAD sponsors.
Io intanto faccio i colloqui informativi ai due insegnanti di inglese, To e Thia. Una buona occasione per testare il loro inglese, sia dal punto di vista della comprensione che del parlato, e di dare loro qualche consiglio su come poter migliorare la loro conoscenza. Buona occasione anche per conoscere la loro storia personale, e per accorgersi una volta in più che ognuno di questi ragazzi si porta dietro un bagaglio di esperienze non semplice, non facile. Approfitto anche per cercare di capire quali sono i loro obiettivi per il fututo, cosa importante per poter programmare le attività. Entrambi attendevano questo colloquio da alcuni giorni, dato che lo avevo preannunciato, e lo attendevano forse con un po’ di preoccupazione. Infatti quando si alzano dalla sedia sembra che si siano tolti un peso dalle spalle. / Meanwhile I conduct an informative interview with the two English teachers To and Thia. It’s a good occasion to test their English, both from the point of view of comprehension and conversation. And to give them some tips on improving their knowledge. It’s also an occasion to learn more about their personal lives, and to realize, once more, that each of these young men carry a baggage of experience that has not been easy. I also take the opportunity to ask about their objectives for the future, answers that are important to us for programming future activities. Both of them had been expecting this interview for a few days as I had already anticipated it to them, and probably they were a little worried about it. In fact when they got up from their seats it was as if a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.
Poi il colloquio con Sokkea, il nostro capo progetto, occasione per fare il punto su come tutto sta girando e su come lui sta vivendo la sua presenza sul progetto. Un colloquio non previsto nella forma in cui lo sto impostando, ma che sicuramente si rivela l’ennesima occasione per comprendere un po’ di più come le cose girano quaggiù, come lui gestisce tutte le emergenze e le esigenze quotidiane del team. Approfittiamo anche per iniziare a fare un po’ di budget sugli impegni del prossimo anno e per commentare insieme il lavoro dello staff (cosa che sarà oggetto domani anche di un incontro specifico con lo staff) e l’inserimento delle nuove figure (nuovo insegnante di inglese, al posto di Chanta, andato a lavorare al dipartimento degli affari sociali, e nuova social worker, molto proattiva ed efficiente). / Next is an interview with Sokkea, the project manager, an occasion to look at how everything is going and how he is living his presence on the project. An interview that was not planned in the form I am conducting it, but it certainly reveals to be the another way to understand a little better how things work over here, how he manages emergencies and everyday needs of his team. We also take the chance to start and lay down a budget for next year’s projects and to comment together on the work of the staff (something that will be object tomorrow in a specific staff meeting), and the insertion of new staff (the new English teacher, replacement for Chanta who has gone to work in the department of social affairs, a new social worker, very active and efficient).
Ci chiamano a mangiare. E’ mezzogiorno e i bambini hanno fame e fretta, perchè di solito mangiano alle 11 e poi alle 12.30-13 devono andare a scuola. / They call us for lunch. It’s midday and the children are hungry and are also in a hurry, because they usually eat at 11 a.m. then between 12.30 and 1 o’clock they have to go to school.
Ovviamente non mi faccio scappare l’occasione di fare un giro di foto. Sono ben oltre 100, tutti pronti a mangiare la loro khmer curry soup. Ma prima di iniziare alcuni di loro vogliono esprimere i ringraziamenti a nome di tutti. Theara, Solida che mi ringrazia ancora per averla fatta venire al Tamao Zoo e poi da ultima Srey Kob. E finalmente possono mangiare. E’ davvero un piacere vederli tutti insieme. Se potessi li abbraccerei tutti….. e chi ha detto che non posso abbracciarli…… Sokkea dì a tutti che prima di andare a scuola o a casa li voglio abbracciare uno per uno. / It goes without saying that I don’t miss the occasion to go round taking photos. There are over 100 children, all ready to eat their Khmer curry soup. But before they start some of them want to say thanks in the name of them all. Theara, Solida, who thanks me again for having given her permission to go to Tamao zoo, then, last of all Srey Kob. Finally they can eat. It’s truly a great pleasure to see them all together. If I could I’d hug them all …. and who’s to say I can’t hug them ….Sokkea, tell them all that before they go to school or go home I want a hug from each and every one.
E così quando arriva l’ora di chiudere il pranzo e devono andare, eccoli che arrivano in piccoli gruppetti, alla spicciolata. Alcuni più decisi mi abbracciano convinti, altri non osano e allora sono io che prendo l’iniziativa. Alcuni più piccolini vogliono darmi un bacio, e come fare ad opporsi a una richiesta così, la mia guancia è subito lì pronta a prendersi tutti i loro baci ……. meravigliosi….. ogni volta una grande intensa emozione….. sembra impossibile, ma è proprio così…. ti smuovono davvero il cuore. / So, when it’s time to finish lunch and for them to go, here they are, arriving in small groups, in dribs and drabs. Some of them, more sure of themselves, give me a convincing hug, others are too shy so I take the initiative. Some of the little ones want to give me a kiss, how can one object to such a request, so my cheek is promptly ready to receive all their kisses …… wonderful …. every time an enormous intense emotion ….iIt seems impossible, but that’s the way it is …. they really touch your heart.
Il resto della giornata se ne va con un caffè freddo alla khmer e lavoro per sistemare file e fotografie (arriverò mai alla fine?). Quando io e Sokkea abbiamo finito i bambini se la sono svignata alla chetichella. Sono rimaste solo Theara, Srey Len e Srey Kob. Ognuna di loro mi porta un braccialetto fatto con gli elastici. Le saluto con affetto prima di andare via. Un saluto a mani giunte per Srey Len e Srey Kob, più grandicelle e un bacino sulla fronte per Theara. E’ stata lei la prima a regalarmi un braccialetto. E ha già detto che è capace di farne anche di molto più complicati e belli in filo annodato. Buona idea per fare dei gadget con cui raccogliere qualche offerta. / The rest of the day is whiled away with an ice cold Khmer coffee and more work sorting out files and photos (will they never come to an end?) When Sokkea and I have finished the children have nearly all sneaked away. There are only Theara, Srey Len and Srey Kob. Each of them bring me a bracelet made from elastics. I say an affectionate goodbye before leaving. Closed palms for Srey Len and Srey Kob, the older ones, a kiss on the forehead for Theara. She was the first one to make me a gift of a bracelet. She has already said she is capable of making a lot more, nicer and more complicated from knotted yarn. It’s a good idea for making gadgets to gather donations.
Oggi il mio tuk tuk è stranamente in ritardo. Arriva trafelato quasi con un quarto d’ora di ritardo. E che dire a lui che è sempre stato puntuale e che mi ha sempre dovuto aspettare delle mezz’ore, perchè finivamo sempre in ritardo con le attività al Centro? / Strangely, today my tuk tuk is late. He arrives flat out about quarter of an hour late. But what can you say to him, whose always been on time and has always had to wait for me, often for half an hour because we always finished late in the Center?
La strada del ritorno è un po’ meglio della mattina. Ci sono tutti gli studenti delle scuole secondarie lungo il percorso. Immergo lo sguardo nel paesaggio. cerco di respirare questa Cambogia che mi ha così profondamente stregato. / Going back to Kep the road is better than it was in the morning. There are lots of secondary school students along the way. I let my gaze go into the countryside, trying to breath in this Cambodia that has so profoundly bewitched me.
L’ultima sera Kep mi regala un bel tramonto con striature rosse nel cielo, a ridosso del profilo di Bokor. / My last evening in Kep presents me with a beautiful sunset with red streaks through the sky, against the profile of Bokor mountain.
Ed ora eccomi qui. Sono le 21.36 e tra poco mi collegherò con la mia famiglia in Italia. Intanto il concerto tutto intorno prosegue assordante. Chumriaplia Kep.
