Venerdì 15 gennaio/Friday 15th January

Oggi lavoro inizia sul serio. Il tuk-tuk è arrivato con un quarto d’ora di ritardo poi è partito come un razzo lungo la strada per Domnak Chamboak che è meglio dell’anno scorso ma non è ancora finito. Sono arrivata durante la prima pausa perché loro iniziano alle 07.30 ma per fortuna con lezioni di Khmer e non hanno bisogno di me fino alle 09.15.
Programma da S per 006 e mezzo: dalle 09.15 alle 10.30 lezioni con Mr. To e la classe più avanzato. Durante l’intervallo dalle 10.30  alle 13.15 lezioni separati per teacher To e teacher Chanta. Ore 13.15 alle 14.30 lezioni con Mr. To e la classe dei grandi pomeridiani. Break. Dalle 15.15 alle 16.30 lezioni con Mr Chanta e la classe dei piccoli.
Quasi tutti i bambini mi conoscono già e non ci sono più problemi di vergogna, guardano me e non i compagni quando non sanno rispondere. Lentamente sto anche imparando i loro nomi ma devono correggere la mia pronuncia almeno tre volte prima che ci arrivò.
Il globo del mondo che ho comperato a PP è stato un successo fenomenale. Indicare dov’è Cambodia, Italia ed Inghilterra è stato divertentissimo. Tutti raggruppati intorno al globo facendo commenti e chiedendo dov’erano altri paesi. Sono rimasti a bocca aperta quando hanno visto quanto è grande la China. Ho spiegato quanti ore di volo da l’Italia a PP e con l’utilizzo di un pallone come sole in che modo gira la terra e perché quando il sole illumina Cambodia ed è giorno mette nell’ombra Italia dove è notte. Certo non mi hanno capito in Inglese To ha dovuto tradurre.
Nel pomeriggio sono arrivati i ragazzi che vanno già alla secondary school compreso Theara e Bunthy allora la classe era molto più grande. Impressionante quanto sono cresciuti Theara e Bunthy, quanto sono diventati adulti e come è migliorato il loro inglese.
La classe di Chanta e molto indietro ma lavoreremo per andare avanti, loro la buona volontà c’è l’hanno.
Così è finito il mio primo giorno d’insegnante. Che bello essere ancora fra questi bambini meravigliosi.

Today work starts seriously. Apart from the fact that my tuk-tuk arrived quarter of an hour late then flew down the road which is in better state than last year but still not finished and bumpy and dusty. Arrived during the break after the first Khmer lessons that start at 07.30!
Program by S for 006 and a half is no joke: from 9.15 until 10.30 English lesson with Mt To and his advanced class. During the lunch break from 10.30 till 13.15 I have to fit in two separate lessons for Mr To and Mr Chanta. From 13.15 until 14.30 lesson with Mr To and a very big class of advanced children followed by break and at 15.15 until 14.30 a small first level class with Mr Chanta.
Almost all of the children know me now and aren’t so embarrassed as they used to be, they look at me for help instead of their school mates. I’m slowly learning their names thought they have to correct me a few times until I get the pronunciation right.
The world globe that I bought in PP has been an enormous success. Indicating Cambodia , Italy and England was really interesting with them all grouped round me and the globe making comments and asking where other countries are. They were astounded by how big China is! I explained how long it took me to fly from Italy to Cambodia and with the use of a football how the earth moved round the sun so why when it was daytime in Cambodia it was night in Italy and England. Certainly they didn’t understand all this in English and To had to translate.
In the afternoon the children who go to secondary school also arrived. Friday is the only day they can make it as on the other days they are at school till late. This makes the class much bigger and it was the first time I saw Theara and Bunthy. How they have grown, become more adult and confident and how their English has improved.
Chanta’s class is at a fairly low level but we will work to improve that. They are willing and able.
So ended my first teaching day. How wonderful to be back with these children.
