E ora di lasciare Phon Penh e prendere la strada per Kep. Purtroppo mi chiama Sokkea con la notizia che suo figlio sta male e stanotte l’hanno portato in ospedale così farò il viaggio da sola e lunedì inizierò al centro senza di lui. Speriamo, per il piccolo, che si rimette presto. / It’s time to leave Phnom Penh and take the road to Kep. Unfortunately Sokkea has called me with the news that his son is ill and during the night they took him to hospital so I will be travelling alone and Monday will start at the Center without him. I hope, for the little one, that he will soon be better.

Quando arriva il mio taxi il ragazzo dell’albergo non è sicuro. L’autista dice che mi deve portare a Kampot ma il ragazzo sa che io vado a Kep. Non vuole che mi porta via l’autista sbagliato. Ma era Sokkea che andava a Kampot e quando dico il suo nome tutti si tranquillizzano e caricano, con fatica, I miei due valigie nel baule. Non conosco questo autista il che mi preoccupa leggermente. Di solito c’è un signore con una guida tranquillizzante e mi fido ciecamente di lui, ma due volte e venuto uno giovane che guida come un pazzo e se Sokkea e in macchina si gira verso di lui per parlare. Ma questo ha una guida veloce ma attento anche se fa una strada diverso e finiamo a Kampot prima di proseguire per Kep ed il mio albergo. / When my taxi arrives the boy from the hotel is not sure. The driver says he has to take me to Kampot but the boy knows I am going to Kep. He doesn’t want the wrong driver to pick me up. But it was Sokkea who was going to Kampot and when I say his name they all calm down and load my two heavy suitcases into the boot. I don’t know this driver which worries me a little. The usual driver is very good and I trust him. But twice a younger man has come for me and he drives very fast and if Sokkea is in the car he turns to look at him while they talk. But this one drives fast but alert even though he did take a different road from the usual one and we ended up in Kampot before continuing to Kep and my hotel.

Ho dovuto cambiare albergo quest’anno. Spring Valley dove sono stata di casa per cinque anni e stato venduto. Adesso sono in un albergo su la strada principale che porta a Kep e un po’ più vicino al centro. Ha un giardino magnifico e due piscine, dove non c’è nessuno  in questo momento mentre mi godo un frullato di mango seduta nella pace del bar. Mi sa che hanno usato un grandangolo quando hanno fatto le foto della stanza per il sito ma va bene così. L’unica cosa è che di solito I turisti si fermano a Kep pochi giorni allora per loro va bene il piccolissimo armadio e niente cassette, ma io sono qui per quasi un mese e anche se ho poche vestite (le due valigie sono pieno di cose per I bambini) ho fatto fatica a trovare posto per tutto. Anche perché hanno saldato I grucce intorno allo sbarro nel armadio, evidentemente I turisti li rubavano. Per fortuna, previdente, ho portato qualcuno  da casa, più che altro per stendere la biancheria! / I have had to change hotels this year. Spring Valley, where I have been at home for the last five years has been sold. I am now in a hotel on the main road into Kep and nearer to the Center. It has a magnificent garden with two swimming pools which are deserted at the moment while I sit enjoying a mango shake in the peace of the bar. They must have used a wide angled lens when they took the photos of the rooms for the web site but it is okay. The one problem is that most tourists only stay in Kep for a few days so the tiny wardrobe and no draws is okay for them, but I will be here for almost a month and even if I haven’t many clothes (those two suitcases are filled with things for the children) I had some difficulty fitting things in. Made more difficult because they have soldered the coat hangers round the rail. Obviously tourists nicked them! Fortunately, ever prepared, I have bought a few from home, mainly for hanging out my washing!

Dopo un giro del giardino torno in camera a sistemare lo zaino per l’inizio del lavoro domani. Non intendo Insegnare subito ma mi limiterò a giocare con il nuovo contingente di pre-scolastici in mattinata ed ad osservare le classe nel pomeriggio. Vorrei giudicare dove la mia presenza può essere più utile ed anche verificare il livello di insegnamento visto che quest’anno Sokkea mi ha chiesto oltre ad insegnare Inglese ai bambini ma come l’anno scorso anche a tutto lo staff compreso dei consigli su insegnare. Questo è bello considerando che quando qualcuno in ufficio più di  vent’anni fa mi ha chiesto di insegnarlo inglese avevo risposto che anche se ero madre lingua non ero sicura di saperlo insegnare a qualcuno. Invece mi sbagliavo. Meglio, altrimenti non sarei qui. / After a turn round the gardens I go back to my room to prepare my rucksack for the start of work tomorrow. I don’t intend starting teaching straight away so I will limit myself to playing with the new pre-school group in the morning and observing the classes in the afternoon. I’d like to judge where I can best be of help and also verify the level of teaching being as this year Sokkea has asked me not only to teach English to the children but as last year also to the teachers as well as giving them tips on teaching. That’s a laugh if you consider that over twenty years ago when somebody in my office asked me to reach them English I answered that even if I was a mother tongue I wasn’t sure I could teach somebody. I was wrong. So much the better otherwise I wouldn’t  be here today.

La prima cena nell’albergo nuovo. Sono preoccupata, sono l’unica persona nel ristorante e so che ci sono altri ospiti, li ho visti e ho visto luci accese nelle camere. Significa che si mangia male? Invece ho mangiato benissimo. Frutti di mare e verdure piccanti, ma veramente piccante e, logicamente, riso. Torno alla mia camera con la pila del cellulare, I sentieri nel giardino sono un po’ bui e non vorrei inciampare ed andare lungo e disteso. Una volta in camera mi guardò in giro. Si cominciò a sentirmi a casa. Domani pronti via. / My first dinner in the new hotel. I’m worried, I’m the only person in the restaurant. Does that mean the food is not good? But no, I had an excellent meal of spicy seafood and vegetables, logically with rice. I go back to mt room using the torch on my cellphone , the pathways are not well lit and I don’t want to trip and fall flat on my face. Once back in my room I look around. Yes, it’s already starting to feel like home. Tomorrow ready steady go.
