Fa un po’ specie vedere bambini mangiare riso, carne e verdure alle nove del mattino ma alcuni piccoli lo portano da casa nel contenitore di polistirolo, quanto lo odio quel materiale. Ma chi l’ha inventato ha anche inventato un modo di distruggerlo? Qui lo usano tutti  per portare in giro il cibo, peccato che non esiste la raccolta differenziata, anzi non esiste la raccolta, punto, e finisce in maggioranza bruciata o sparso per le campagne. Fatto la sfuriata ecologica di oggi passiamo ai bambini. Si, oggi siamo arrivati a 5. Non si stancano di questo gioco ed intanto hanno imparato a contare fino a 10. Hanno anche imparato di piegare il foglio per metterlo nello zaino.  Vi pare poco? / It seems very strange seeing little kids eating rice, vegetable and meat at nine o’clock in the morning, but that is what some of the little ones bring from home in polystyrene boxes, how I hate that material.  Did the people who invented it also invent a way of destroying it? Here everybody uses it for carrying food around, pity that differentiated rubbish collections don’t exist, in-fact rubbish collections don’t exist full stop and the majority gets burnt or spreads around the countryside. Right, having got over my environmental blow up for today let’s pass on to the kids. Yes, today they arrived at 5. They never tire of this game and at the same time they have learnt to count to 10. They have also learnt to fold the paper nicely to put in their school bags. Does that appear insignificant?

Nel pomeriggio trovo facci conosciuti ma fuori luogo nei miei lezioni. Oggi,  Venerdì trova tanti ragazzi della scuola secondaria in libertà, per poi andare sabato mattina. All’inizio del mese erano in due o tre, ma la parola deve essere stata passata che sono nel Centro e mi ritrovo tanti alunni conosciuti, se non di nome di vista. Alcuni vogliano solo salutarmi, altri farsi aiutare a scrivere lettere o fare I compiti, altri ancora si aggregano agli lezioni. E adesso devo stare attenta perché una di queste clandestine e Sivchou, sempre prima nella classe e quando frequentava il Centro quella che mi dicevo che non avevo messo il punto su l’i,  la “e” non era scritto bene, non avevo messo il punto alla fine di una frase. Adesso prendo la rivincita, la chiedo di tradurre qualche istruzione poi di darmi una mano e correggere quello che I studenti hanno scritto su I quaderni. Certo e più severa di me! Durante l’intervallo la trovo scrivere alla sua sponsor Americana ma in Khmer che sarà poi tradotto, insisto che è capace di farlo in Inglese e che è molto importante per lo sponsor. All’inizio mi guarda come se fosse fuori di testa, ma insisto “almeno prova”. E c’è la fa, non solo lei ma anche una sua amica. Sono orgogliosa di loro. / In the afternoon I find known faces that are out of place in my classes. Today is Friday and a lot of secondary school children don’t have classes, only to go to school on Saturday. At the beginning of the month there were just two or three but now word must have spread that I am back and I find a lot of my old students, some I know by name others I only recognise. Some just want to say hello, others ask help to write a letter or do homework, others join in my lessons. Now I have to be careful because one of these clandestine students is Sivchou, always first in the class, and when she still came to the Center the one who pointed out I hadn’t put the dot on the “I”  or the “e” was badly written or I had forgotten to put a full stop. Now I can get my own back, I ask her to translate some instructions then to give me a hand correcting what the students have written in their exercise books. She is certainly more severe than I am! During the break I find her writing to her American sponsor but in Khmer that will then be translated, I insist she is capable of doing it in English and that it is very important for the sponsor. At first she looks at me as if I’ve gone out of my mind, but I insist “at least try”. She did it and not only her but another friend as well. I’m very proud of them.

Li vedrò tutti Domenica quando ci sarà la distribuzione di alimentari ai ragazzi della secondaria fatta in sostituzione della merenda che non essendo presenti nel Centro non usufruiscono più. / I will see them all on Sunday when there will be the distribution of foodstuff to the children of the secondary school as a substitute to the snack that not being present in the Center they no longer get.
