Tutto tranquillo stamattina, se non prendi in considerazione canzoni e balli con I più piccoli. Fra il mangiare poco a mezzogiorno, l’esercizio fisico e il caldo se non perdo qualche kilo ci rinuncio. / All calm this morning, if you don’t take into consideration songs and dancing with the little ones. Between eating very little at lunch time, physical exercise and the heat if I don’t loose a few kilos I will give up.

 Come stavo dicendo, tutto calma fino verso l’una. Avevo appena mangiato metà papaya quando vedo goccie di pioggia sul tavolo. Tiro su tutto e prendo rifugio nell’interno. Appena in tempo, scoppia un diluvio, si un altro. Non riesco capire questo tempo pazzo. Alcuni bambini sono già arrivati ed altri arrivano bagnati fradici. Tanto si mettano a giocare con e nell’acqua. Finché non arrivano lampi e tuoni da far tremare la terra. Scappano tutti dentro urlando e prendano rifugio intorno a me. Dura una mezz’oretta poi smette. Ma abbastanza per tenere a casa parecchie studenti. La prima classe dal solito 22 e ridotto a 16. / As  was saying, it was all calm until around one o’clock. I had just finished eating half of my papaya when I saw drops of rain on the table. I gather everything up and take refuge inside. Just in time, it starts to pour down, yes again. I can’t understand this crazy weather. Some of the children have already arrived, some arrive soaking wet. No matter, they play with and out in the rain. That is until the thunder and lightening arrives then they run screaming inside to take refugee around me. It lasts half an hour then stops. But enough to keep a lot of children at home. The first class from a normal 22 is reduced to 16.

Oggi ho chiesto di sostituire il mio solito insegnante di sostegno, Sony, con Kimlaan. Non ho mai tempo di vedere come insegna ne farla vedere come insegno io. La mia richiesta viene concessa e andiamo avanti sempre insistendo su gli opposti. Oggi va molto meglio. Lei li interroga su il senso della parola in Khmer. Sono felice che hanno capito quasi tutto. Felice perché mi spiego con gesti; “veloce” mi metto a correre, “lento” cammino piano. Strano che non hanno capito “povero e ricco”  ma era stato difficile da spiegare “duro e soffice” . Ma tutto sommata sono contenta. / Today I asked if I could exchange my usual assistant teacher, Sony, with Kimlaan. I have not had time to watch her teach or show her my teaching methods. I am given the okay and we go ahead insisting on “opposites”. It’s going much better, she questions them on the meaning of the words in Khmer. I am happy to see they have understood almost everything. Happy because I explain with gestures; “fast” I run “slow” I walk very slowly. Strangely they hadn’t understood “rich and poor” but it had been difficult explaining “hard and soft”. But all considered I am happy.

 Durante la pause le donne si occupano di tirare fuori I costumi del ballo tradizionale Khmer. Fino un anno fa I ragazzi facevano lezioni con molta voglia,  divertimento e profitto, poi non abbiamo più trovato un insegnante e hanno dovuto smettere. Domani verrà in prova un insegnante che se va bene verrà per due ore alla settimana. Logicamente I ragazzi, sia maschi, sia femmine sono più che contenti. / During break the women are busy taking out the costumes for traditional Khmer dancing. Up to a year ago the children had lessons with great enthusiasm, enjoyment and success, then we couldn’t find a teacher so they had to stop. Tomorrow a new teacher is coming and if he is good will come for two hours each week. Obviously the kids, both male and female are happy.

 Una volta svolta questo compito prendiamo una pausa con mango acerbo accompagnato con sale e peperoncino. Basta abituarsi! Riprendano le lezione e Kimlaan mi accompagna ancora, questa volta ha la possibilità di vedere un video di Gogo. Ma con l’inghippo che abbiamo avuto con la prima classe la seconda, che era indietro di cerca tre puntate li ha raggiunti, cioè “opposti”. Già alla prima prova riescano con molto più successo, sia nel leggere sia nel comprendere. Stupendo. / Having finished this job we all sit down for a pause with unripe mango dipped in salt and chilli pepper. You can get used to It! Lessons continue and Kimlaan stays with me, she has the chance to see a video of Gogo. But with the set-back we had with the first class the second class, who were about three lessons behind, have now caught up, that is they have arrived at “opposites”. Already at the first go they manage with success both in reading and understanding. Fantastic.

 Tornando in albergo eravamo dietro una fila di motorini caricati al inverosimile che andavano pianissimo,  quando,  con grande suonare di clacson,  ci ha sorpassato un camion. Per fortuna Dom l’aveva già visto ed e rientrato dietro I motorini. Ma essendo in un piccolo, aperto tuk-tuk quel camion era troppo vicino per conforto. E con questo finisce un altro giorno. / Going back to the hotel we were behind a line of. Small motorbikes loaded in an incredible fashion that we’re going very slow, when, with a great blasting of horn , a lorry overtook is. Fortunately Dom had already seen it coming and had got back into line behind the motorbikes. But being in a small open tuk-tuk that lorry was a bit too close for comfort. So another day ends.
