Oggi I piccolini hanno iniziato ad imparare I numeri in inglese, in Khmer li hanno già studiati. Iniziamo logicamente con 1. Un foglio da tracciare 1 tanti volete ed un elefante da colorare. Poi guardiamo una canzone che conta fino a cinque. Siccome l’insegnanti hanno paura che I pennarelli che ho portato non vanno bene perché I bambini si sporcano le mani ho fatto vedere che sta scritto “washable”.  Per rafforzare il concetto ho messo una canzone su lavare le mani e quando era finito ho mandato tutti al lavandino a lavare le mani. Alcuni non mollavano più il sapone ma si sono divertiti un mondo è sono andati a casa con mano puliti. / Today the little ones have started to learn numbers in English, they have already studied them in Khmer. Obviously we start with 1. A piece of paper where they have to trace lots of 1s and an elephant to colour. Then we watch a song that counts up to five. As the teachers are worried about using the felt tipped pens I have brought because they dirty the children’s  hands I show them that it says “washable”on the box. To prove my point I put on a song about washing hands, then send them all off to the sink to wash their hands. Some of them wouldn’t let go of the soap but they all had great fun and went home with clean hands.

Durante il fine settimana avevo dato un compito agli insegnanti per fare una lezione di conversazione oggi. Kimheap mi deve parlare della università, Kimlaan del suo villaggio, Sony sul insegnare e Channa sul suo lavoro. Kimlaan e Channa si sono preparate benissimo. Kimheap si era dimenticata ma con un po’ di spinta sono riuscita a farla parlare Sony anche. Ma ho dovuto spostare Kimlaan su un altro scrivania perché suggeriva e minacciare Channa di mandarla fuori dell’aula per lo stesso motivo. Saranno grandi ma si comportano come tutti I studenti! Poi lascio a loro la libertà di farmi domande. Vogliano sapere, perché non mangio a mezzogiorno, perché vengo in Cambodia e logicamente perché non sono sposata. E venuta fuori una bella chiacchierata. / Over the weekend I had given the teachers a task to prepare  a subject for conversation today. Kimheap had to talk about University, Kimlaan about her village, Sony about teaching and Channa about her job. Kimlaan and Channa had prepared themselves really well. Kimheap had forgotten but with a little pushing I managed to get her to talk, Sony too. But I had to move Kimlaan to another desk for suggesting and threaten to send Channa outside for the same reason. They might be grown ups but they behave like all students. I then left them free to ask me questions. They want to know, why I don’t eat at lunch time, why I come to Cambodia and naturally why I am not married. It resulted in a very nice chat.

Oggi con la prima classe pomeridiana Gogo ci insegna opposti. Sono molto di più di quelli che può insegnare lui allora li scrivo su la lavagna e loro copiano, leggiamo, rileggiamo e passiamo ad un gioco. Un piccolo puzzle, composto di due pezzi, ovviamente opposti. Distribuisco due pezzi a testa poi li lascio liberi ad andare in giro a trovare il pezzo opposto. Mi rendo conto che non tutti hanno capito il senso delle parole anche se poi I puzzle viene fatto. Torniamo alla lavagna. Leggete, senza di me. Alcuni lo sanno fare. Alcuni sono stati intelligente ed hanno imparato da altri insegnanti di scrivere in Khmer la pronuncia di fianco alla parola. Loro ci riescano benissimo e mi va bene che lo fanno così. Ma decido che finché non riescano a leggere e capire queste parole niente Gogo! / Today with the first class Gogo taught us opposites. But there are far more than he can teach so I write some on the board and they copy, read, read again and pass over to a game. It is a small puzzle, made up of only two pieces, obviously opposites. I give out two pieces to each one then let them free to go around and find the correct opposite word. It doesn’t take long before I understand that not all of them have understood the meaning of the words even though in the end the puzzle gets done. We go back to the board. Read without me. Some of them can do it. Some of them have intelligently learnt from the teachers to write the sound in Khmer next to the word when I pronounce it. They manage well and it’s fine by me. But I decide that until they can read and understand the words properly no more Gogo!

Con la seconda classe non ci sono problemi e si divertano un sacco quando bendo gli occhi ad un studenti, gli altri urlano  “ che cos’è “ ed io metto in mano un oggetto e mi devano dire, in Inglese logicamente, il nome del oggetto. Non riesco farli smettere. Ogni uno vuole essere quello bendato ma per me è difficile trovare oggetti diversi, finisco perfino con un piccolo sgabello di plastica. Ma devano anche scrivere “io posso ….”fare vari cose e faccio una lista di domande. Spiego che quando scrivano la domanda  sotto devano rispondere “si posso o no non posso” quando qualcuno mette solo le domande o qualcuno altro mette che possano volare mi rendo conto che forse un altro problema c’e. Ma piccola, la maggior parte hanno capito anche se abbiamo sforata di 20 minuti la lezione. / There are no problems with the second class and they enjoy themselves enormously when I blindfold a student and the others shout”what is it?”while I put an object in their hands and they have to tell me what is the name of the object, in  English obviously. They all want a turn at being blindfolded but it gets difficult for me to find objects to give them. I even end up with a tiny plastic stool! But they also have to write “I can do …”various things and I make a list on the board. I explain that when they copy the question in their books underneath they must put the answer “yes I can or no I can’t” , when some of them only write the questions and others write that they can fly I realise maybe I  have another problem after all, but only a little one. Most of them understood though we went over the lesson by 20 minutes!

Alla sera Channa legge una lista di bambini che settimana prossima devono andare in ospedale per il controllo agli orecchie e Sony distribuisce un foglio informativo per I genitori. Poi scappo via perché Sony ha cominciato a fare un romanzo ai bambini e so che quando comincia…… tra altro Mr Dom mi aspetta già da 20 minuti. / In the evening Channa reads out a list of children who have to go to hospital for an ear check-up next week and Sony gives out letters informing the parents. Then I creep away as Sony is giving the children a lecture and once he starts……. Also Mr. Dom has been waiting for me for 20 minutes.
