Cominciato male oggi. Dopo la prima notte di sonno senza interruzione mi sono svegliata, fatto la doccia, vestito, messo l’orologio, lo guardò, sono le 8,00! Ma non è possibile, la sveglia era per le 07,00 e non ci metto così tanto a fare la doccia. Mi sa che mi devo essere riaddormentata. / The day started badly. After  the first night of uninterrupted sleep I woke , had a shower, got dressed, put my watch on, looked at it and it said 8am! It couldn’t possibly be, the alarm went off at 7am, it doesn’t take me that long to have a shower! I must have gone back to sleep after the alarm. 

Volo al ristorante e anche loro sono in ritardo. Mangio di corsa, non pulisco i denti, cosa inaudito per me, e vado fuori all’appuntamento con Mr Dom. Non c’è. Va bene, faccio piano la passeggiata fino alla fine della strada. Non arriva, fanno le 08,20, 08,25 chiamo. Non aveva capito bene visto che l’avevo anche detto che oggi alle 15,00 doveva portarmi a Kampot. Dopo cinque minuti arriva un suo collega e con le scuse di Mr. Dom mi porta lui al centro. Poi si arrangeranno loro per il pagamento della corsa. Io pago alla fine settimana. / Flew down to the restaurant, who were also late, didn’t clean my teeth which is unheard of for me and went outside for my appointment with Mt Dom, who wasn’t there. Oh well, I took a slow walk to the bottom of the road. Still no sign of him, 08,20, 08,25, I call him. He had misunderstood what I had said the day before because I had told him that as well as coming for me in the morning he had to come to the center for me at 3 o’clock to take me to Kampot. After five minute a colleague arrived with Mr Doms apologises and took me to the center. They will arrange for payment between themselves as I pay at the end of the week.

Dopo una breve conversazione con Sokkea iniziò la mia prima lezione. Piccoli con ABC. Uso i flash cards per arrivare a F dove erano arrivati ieri, ma facciamo anche un variante, aggiungiamo “a is for ….” E sanno un sacco di altre parole. Scrivano, faccio le stesse correzione di sempre, il fatto di scrivere le parole attaccati come fanno nel Khmer la loro lingua. Per la loro gioia chiudiamo con “head, shoulders, knees and toes”. Soliti saluti ed abbracci che con questo caldo risulta in un bagno di sudore, ma non mi lamento. / After a brief conversation with Sokkea I start my first lesson. Little ones with ABC. I use some new flash cards up to F which is far as they got yesterday, but I use a variant, I add “A is for …. ” and I discover they know quite a few words. They write them all in their books and I have to make the usual correction, the fact that they write the words attached together as in Khmer their own language. To their great joy we close with “head, shoulders, knees and toes”. Then goodbye hugs which in this heat resulted in a real sweat, but I’m not complaining.

Parto in tuk-tuk con Sothea e Kimlan per Kampot che dista più o meno 10 chilometri. Andiamo in un negozio di libri a cercare un libro per insegnare loro l’inglese. Io e Sochea non siamo molto d’accordo su la scelta perché lui vorrebbe uno in khmer/Inglese ma non troviamo niente di adeguato e scelgo uno che uso a casa, lo farò andare bene anche perché sopra tutto hanno bisogno di conversazione, vocabolo e pronuncia. Segue una la ricerca su prezzi di biciclette, alla fine sudore mescolato con spray anti zanzare mi sta colando negli occhi, non piacevole. Chiedo se vogliano andare a mangiare e di dare istruzioni a Mr Dom, io non ho la minima idea di dove mangiare a Kampot.  Mi accorgo invece che stiamo prendendo la strada per il centro, chiedo se non vogliano fermarsi a mangiare, mi risponde di no ma vedo che la ragazza è di tutt’altro idea. Pazienza io non ho problemi. / I leave in the tuk-tuk with Kimlan and Sothea for Kampot which is around 10km away. We go to a bookshop to look for a book for their English lessons. Sochea and I do not agree on our choice as he would like a book in Khmer/English but they are all far too advanced. We finally choose one that I use at home, I’ll make it do because above all they need conversation, vocabulary and pronunciation. Having got that out of the way we proceed with an inquiry into the price of bikes. By the time that was finished sweat and anti mosquito spray were dripping into my eyes. Not very nice. I ask the others were they would like to go to eat and tell them to give directions to Mr Dom as I have no ideawhere to eat in Kampot. I then realise we are on the road on the way back to the center, I ask them again if they want to stop to eat, Sothea says no but I can tell the girl doesn’t agree. Patience I don’t have a problem. 

Torniamo al centro in tempo per un altra chiacchierata con Sokkea poi vado a prendere la mia classe pomeridiano. Il negozio di fotocopie mi ha pinzato le copie nello stesso modo che io avevo messo una graffetta. Va bene decidi di darle tutto il malloppo. E faccio bene. Il soggetto è strutture:  scuola, ospedale, chiesa e così via. Dopo il primo foglio con le parole che ripetiamo rutti insieme ce da fare la “cerca parole, le parole crociate, congiungere parole con le figure (peccato che le fotocopie fanno schifo) ma loro si ricordano come si fa dalla mia ultima visita in Gennaio/Febbraio di quest’anno è senza che io spieghi niente i più bravi si portano avanti. C’è un coro did “teacher I have finished” ma che meraviglia prima dicevano solo “teacher finished” ma anche questo piccolo insegnamento è rimasto come il “teacher please may I go to the toilet” invece che ” teacher toilet please”. Ammetto sono piccoli, piccoli passi in avanti, ma sono comunque passi in avanti e vedere il loro orgoglio quando dico “Very good” vale in se  il viaggio. Devo aiutare alcuni che non erano in classe con me prima a capire come funziona il “cerca la Parola” le parole incrociate, le lettere mescolate. Alla fine della lezione nessuno ha completato tutto, chiedo a tutti di scrivere il nome su le schede e consegnarmeli. Sarà il mio “hotel work” ma è anche un trucco per rinfrescare la memoria su loro nomi. Alcuni li conosco bene, ma quando cominci ad avere due Sreylich o Sreylek nella classe le cose si complicano e ci tengo a chiamarli per nome, sono così orgogliosi quando lo faccio. / We get back to the center in time to have another talk with Sokkea before going to my afternoon class. The photocopy shop had clipped the copies together in the same way as I had divided them. I decide it’s easiest to give them to the students like that. It’s  a good idea. The subject is “buildings”: school, hospital, church and so on. After the first page with sketches and words which we repeat all together there is a word search page, crosswords, join words to the sketches(unfortunately the photocopies are not very clear) but the children remember doing these things from my last visit in January/February and I have no need to explain, the better ones just get on with it while I help the others. Soon there is a chorus of “teacher I have finished” great, before they used to say “teacher finished” it’s a small piece of teaching that has stuck, like “teacher please may I go to the toilet” instead of “teacher toilet please”. I admit they are only small steps forward, but they are still steps forward and to see their pride when I say “very good” makes the whole trip worthwhile. I need to help some who weren’t in my class last time  with word search, crosswords and muddled letters. At the end of the lesson they haven’t all finished so I ask them to write their names on the paper and give them to me. It will be my “hotel work” but it’s also a trick to help me remember their names. Some of them I know well but when you start to have two Sreylichs or Sreylek in the class things get complicated and I want to call them by name, they are so pleased when I do.

La pausa lo passo con Sokkea che sta mettendo giù il mio programma. Sabato e Domenica riunione con i genitori e mi dici che devo essere presente, addio piscina, ma cosa mi sono comperato un costume nuova da fare e sì che trovare una nella mia misura non era facile. Pensano che le XXL non devano andare in piscina. Forse hanno ragione. / I pass the break with Sokkea who is putting down my work program. Saturday and Sunday there will be meetings with the parents and he wants me to be present, goodbye swimming pool, don’t know why I bothered buying a new swimming costume particularly as it was difficult to find in my size. Maybe they think people with XXL shouldn’t go in swimming pools, maybe they are right.

Terza lezione, ma avendo parlato con Sokkea entro tardi, dico a Kimhheap di continuare ma a un certo punto chiede a me di prendere in mano la lezione: mouth, open, mouth open. Per me è sempre un mistero il modo che i bambini rispondano a un madre lingua. Si sforzano di più, vogliano venire a leggere alla lavagna, perfino quelli così timidi che quasi non sento quando parlano e devo incoraggiarli  a parlare più forte perché logicamente c’è sempre qualcuno nella classe che parlano per loro, di solito quelli che quando arrivano alla lavagna rimangano muti. / Third lesson but having talked with Sokkea I arrive late, I tell Kemheap to continue but at a certain point she asks me to take over the lesson: mouth, open, mouth open. It’s always a mystery to me the way the children respond to a mother tongue teacher. They try harder, they want to read from the board, even the more timid ones that are difficult to hear because they speak so quietly and I have to suggest and tell them to speak up otherwise there is always some bright one out there who suggests, usually the ones who are tongue tied when it is their turn.  

Mentre finisco la lezione arrivano  Sihchou ed una sua compagna dalla scuola secondaria Quando metto i bambini in riga per insegnare il solito “head, shoulders etc” si mettano anche loro. Perfino Kimheap abbandona la sua cronica timidezza e si mette a cantare. Deve essere un buon esercizio fisico per una della mia età. Poi Sivchou mi chiede di cantare  “row, row, row the boat” devo inventare un pochino mi sono dimenticato l’orso polare! / As I finish the lesson Sivchou and another girl arrive from secondary school. When I line the kids up to teach them “head, shoulders, knees and toes” they join in, even Kimheap abandons her chronicle shyness and starts to sing and do the actions. It must be good exercise for somebody my age. Then Sivchou asks me to sing”row, row, row the boat” I have to invent some bits, I had completely forgotten about the polar bear!

Sivchou si mette a parlare con Sokkea che mi chiama a raggiungerli. Mentre mi guardano con occhi implorante mi spiega che vorrebbero fare lezioni d’inglese con me dalle 17,00 alle 18,00. Qui è la volta buona che 006 e mezzo ci lascia le penne. Ma come faccio dirle di no? Erano fra i miei prima studenti nel 2014, Tiro un sospiro e dico di sì. Fanno salti di gioia. Dico di cercare altri compagni e di portarmi i libri di scuola in modo di capire a che livello sono. / Sivchou starts a very serious conversation with Sokkea who calls me over. While they look at me imploringly he explains they would like English lessons with me from 5pm to 6pm. I reckon this is the time that 006 and a half really will come a cropper. But how can I say no? They were amongst my first students in 2014. Taking in a deep breath I say yes. I tell them to look for more classmates and bring me their school books so that I can see what level they are at. . 

Tirò su là zaino, magari oggi riesco uscire senza la solita carica. Scherziamo, arrivano, una piccola rischia di soffocare visto che è arrivata per prima e non riesce più ad uscire. Per loro, oramai, non è solo il fatti di abbracciarmi ma di chi arriva per prima, chi stringe di più o più a lungo. Insomma esco stritolata con quattro ragazze grande che vogliano fare la strada con me, ma è un po dura con loro in bicicletta ed io a piedi ed il sentiero stretto. In fondo la strada Vannak ci intimida l’alt perché arriva una macchina. / I pick up my rucksack thinking I might manage to get out without the usual charge of the light brigade, your jocking, here they come, one tiny girl gets crushed against me as she arrived first and the bigger ones pile on top and she can’t get out. By now, for them it’s not just a fact of hugging me so much as who arrives first, who hugs the hardest and who can manage to stay attached the longest. So I leave after being crushed with a company of four girls with bicycles who want to go down the path with me, not so easy with them on bicycles, me on foot and a narrow hump pathway through the rice field. At the end of the path we find Vannak who orders us to stop as there is a car coming. He’s a good little policeman.

In albergo mi rifugio al bar per un Happy Hour e 2 daiquiri all’ananas. Adesso se ci sono errori non è a causa solo della stanchezza! Cena da Mr Mab al Crab market con il suono delle onde ed un bel piatto di gamberoni in agro dolce, con l’imancabile riso ed una birra Angkor. Ma mentre aspettavo scrivevo, qui non ci si ferma mai. Peccato che il tuk-tuk driver non è venuto a riprendermi e dopo mezz’ora ho trovato qualcuno con il numero dell’albergo che ha chiamato e mi hanno mandato u.n altro autista.
Cominciato male, finito male, ma in mezzo stupendo. A domani fedeli lettori. / In the hotel I take refuge in the bar and advantage of the Happy Hour, 2 pineapple Daiquiri. Now if you have found any mistakes, you know why or that or I’m really tired. Dinner at Mr Mab’s in the crab market, with the sound of the waves and a wonderful plate of sweet and sour prawns, the omnipresent rice and a glass of Angkor beer. But while I wait I continue writing this diary, here production never stops. Pity that the tuk-tuk driver who took me forgot to come and take me back. After half an hour I found someone with the hotel number who sent me a different driver. Bad start and bad ending but the bit in between was great. Get you tomorrow my loyal readers.
