The children welcome Jane back to our Center – Photo Gallery at the end of the page

Non poteva che essere una bella giornata oggi. Finito la colazione sono scesa per aspettare Mr Dom tuk-tuk driver numero 1 ed era già fuori ad aspettarmi, ma non solo lui, anche Channa la social worker e due ragazze Nadine e Noy Sreynich tutti sorrisi. Channa mi abbraccia timidamente e anche le ragazze. Sorpresa, Channa si mette a parlare in Inglese. In Gennaio/Febbraio mi aveva detto che non sapeva parlare in Inglese anche se avevo capito che qualcosa sapeva. Adesso mi spiega che i “miei” ragazzi non hanno potuto venire perché oggi avevano esami a scuola, speriamo in bene. Nadine e Sreynich si erano preparate e per tutto il viaggio mi hanno chiesto come stavo, come mi chiamo, da dove vengo e quanti anni ho. Domandi che sanno da anni e alle quali sanno già la risposta, ma dovevano superare l’iniziale timidezza. / There’s no way it couldn’t have been a wonderful day today. After finishing breakfast I went out to wait for Mr Dom number 1 tuk-tuk driver and he was already there waiting for me, but not alone, there was Channa our social worker and two of the girls Nadine and Sreynich Noy all smiles. Channa and the girls gave me a timid hug . Surprise, Channa started to speak to me in English. I. January and February when I was here she had claimed not to speak English though I had already cottoned on that she understood more than she admitted. Now here she is explaining that “my” two children couldn’t come to meet me as they had exams at school, let’s hope they go okay. Nadine and Sreynichhad prepared themselves and for all the journey asked me how I was, what was my name, from where do I come from and how old am I. Questions they have known for years and they also know the answers, they just wanted to get over their initial shyness.

All’arrivo al centro ho visto i bambini cominciare e venire di corsa lungo il sentiero fra i campi, ma sono stati richiamati all’ordine e hanno aspettato al cancello per salutarmi con tanti abbracci, anche alcuni che non conosco. Poi il richiamo della merenda era troppo forte e si sono messi in fila per la torta ed il latte di soya. / On arriving at the center I saw the children start to rush for the path that leads through the fields but they were called to order and waited at the gate to greet me with lots of hugs, some of them I don’t even know. They are then called back for their break snack and they get into line for a cake and soya milk. 

Bello, adesso hanno due tavoli con sei panche nello spazio davanti alla biblioteca e ci stanno comodi per la merenda, almeno i ragazzi, per qualche ragione solo due ragazze sono riusciti ad inserirsi. La merenda e seguito da una pausa per i giochi mentre io parlo con gli insegnanti conoscendo la ragazza nuova (devo ancora capire il suo nome) che ha solo 18 ed è molto carina. / Now they have two big tile tables and six benches in front of the library where they can sit comfortably and eat their snacks, at least the boys can, for some reason only two girls have managed to get in. Snack is followed by a games break while I speak with the teachers, meeting our new girl (I must find out her name) she is only 18 and quite pretty.

Tutti vogliano fare lezioni d’inglese con me anche se sarà difficile per Channa che ha una bambina piccola, la mascotte del centro. Spiegò che oggi voglio solo assistere alle lezioni per vedere a che punto sono arrivati. Cominciò con Sothea e una classe di piccoli che in Gennaio stavano facendo ABC. Adesso sono molto più avanti, ma c’è sempre quel maledetto 2017 che pronunciano come 2020. Mi permetto di interrompere per correggere, inutile che imparano male. Secondo me non vedano l’ora che finisce un anno con il 7 che per loro risulta molto difficile da pronunciare. / They all want to have English lessons with me even though it will be difficult for Channa because of her little girl, the school mascot. I explain to them that today I intend to just sit in on their lessons to see what point they have got to. I start off with Sothea and a class of small children who in January were just starting on their ABC. Now they are a lot further on if only it wasn’t for that stumbling block of 2017. That they pronounce like 2020. I permit myself to intervene and correct them, there is no sense in teaching them incorrectly. In my opinion they will be glad to see the end of a year with a 7 in it as it is very difficult for them to pronounce.

La lezione finisce contando fino a 50, le ragazze sono molto brave 3 ragazzi hanno particolare difficoltà,  ma sono sicura che con un po’ di gentile insistenza arriveranno anche loro. Finito la lezione non possiamo rompere la tradizione. Tutti in piedi a cantare “Head, shoulders , knees and toes”, l’adorano.
Tutti in fila per i saluti ed un piccolo romanzina che non ho capito bene, poi tanti abbracci. Questa volta perfino i ragazzi vengano ad abbracciarmi, anzi sono stati i primi. È bellissimo a sentire il loro affetto. A domani bambini. / Our lesson finishes with them all counting to 50, the girls are quite good but three boys struggle, I’m sure that with a bit of gentle insistence they will overcome it too. Lesson over we can’t break with tradition so everybody stands up and we sing “Head, shoulders, knees and toes”They love it. Everybody in line to say goodbye and a little telling off though I didn’t catch what for. Then lots more hugs . This time even the boys come, in fact they are the first. Their affection is a wonderful feeling. See you tomorrow children.

Sothea mi spiega che vuole andare a Kampot per acquistare libri d’inglese in modo che posso fare lezioni a loro durante la pausa pranzo. Discutiamo su che libri prendere poi ci mettiamo d’accordo di andare insieme domani con Mr Dom perché oggi lui sarebbe andato in moto e mi rifiuto categoricamente, va bene quasi licenza di uccidere ma di essere uccisa no. / Sothea explains he wants to go to Kampot to buy English books so that they can start lessons during the lunch break. We discuss what type of books to buy and then agree to go together tomorrow with Mr. Dom because today he would have gone by motorbike and that is something I categorically refuse to do. Almost license to kill okay but not to be killed.

Mentre Sothea va a fare la spese per il pranzo parlo un po’ con la nuova insegnante. Poi li guardò mentre preparano il pranzo, una zuppa piccante con tre verdure, riconosco solo i fiori di zucca, e pesce. Quando è pronto rifiuto di assaggiarlo a causa delle spine nel pesce, mi manca solo di farmi finire d’attraverso una spina in gola, anche se ho scoperto d’avere dimenticato il mio biscotto pranzo in albergo, pazienza farò la dieta. / While Sothea goes to do the shopping for lunch I chat a bit with the new teacher. I then watch them while they prepare their lunch of spicy vegetable soup with fish. Out of the three vegetables used I only recognised courgette flowers. When it was ready they did offer me some but I gratefully refused on account of the fish. I can do without getting fish bones stuck in my throat! Then I realised I had left my lunch time snack in the hotel. Oh well diet today.

Ed ecco che arrivano, tutti i bambini che conosco bene, di corsa con mani giunti e “good afternoon Jane, how are you?” Vannak, Visal,Linda, Kimheng che riceve un grosso bacio da parte di Franco è ancora, ancora. Un ragazzo arriva con un budino, no so di cosa anche dopo averlo mangiato ma l’ho molto apprezzato. Ci sono 19 ragazzi e ragazze nella prima classe oggi pomeriggio. Ancora mi limito ad assistere anche se loro mi guardano per approvazione. / Here they come, all the children that I know well, running up with joined hands and “good afternoon Jane, how are you?” Vannak, Visal, Linda, Kimheng who receives a big kiss on Franco’s behalf and more and more. A boy offers me a pudding, I’ve no idea what it was even after eating it but I was very grateful for it. There are 19 children in this first afternoon class. Once more I limit myself to sitting in and assisting even if they all look at me for approval.

Alla pausa merendina mi trovo una fila di ragazze che vogliano offrirmi il loro merenda, ringrazio ma insisto che lo tengano loro, ma ammetto che ero tentata! Poi un altra sorpresa, vedo arrivare Chanta, l’insegnante che ho conosciuto nella prima missione e con il quale vado molto d’accordo. Non lavora più per noi ma passa spesso ed oggi sapeva di trovarmi. Ma arriva anche Sokkea, responsabile del progetto che pensavo sarebbe arrivato domani. Parliamo un po’ poi sono chiamata alla terza lezione, ancora piccolini con Kemheap (?). Sono arrivati alla lettera L e la parola “leg” è sempre a guardare me per approvazione e parlare più forte per attirare la mia attenzione. Ma dove trovi bambini che finiscano la scuola e vengano ancora a studiare con così tanto volontà? / At break time I find myself with a line of young girls wanting to give me their snacks. I’m very tempted but thanking them say no. Then another surprise, I see Chanta arriving, a teacher I met on my first teaching experience here and who I get on with very well. He doesn’t work for us any more but often passes by and today he knew I would be there. Sokkea the manager responsible for the project in Cambodia also arrives though I wasn’t expecting him until tomorrow. We talk a bit until I am called away for my third and last lesson., once more a group of small children with Kemheap (?) They have got as far as the letter L and the word “leg” and once more looking to me for approval and speaking up loudly to gain my attention. Where can you find children who after half a day at state school will come and study willing in another place?

Alla fine della lezione viene chiamata una riunione dello staff e si concorda che tutti quanti insieme faranno lezioni d’inglese con me all’inizio della pausa pranzo un ora cinque giorni alla settimana. Questa comincia ad essere una missione veramente impegnativa! / Lesson over I am called in to a staff meeting where they all agree to have English lessons together at the beginning of the lunch break for an hour five days a week. It’s starting to be a  full time mission!

Mentre mi avvio, già in ritardo per il tuk-tuk, mi blocco. È comparso il mio ragazzo Bunthy. Quanto è diventato un ometto serio. Gli chiedi degli esame di oggi. Mi spiega che era un esame mensile su tutte le materie e che fuori di una classe di 48, si, avete capito 48, è arrivato 18. Lo dico che va bene, ma di provare a migliorare, tanto la stoffa c’è l’ha. Uscendo mi fa vedere con orgoglio che ha ancora la bici che l’ho comperato 2 anni fa. È molto orgoglioso della sua bici. Quando l’abbiamo comperato avrebbe voluto un mountain bike, ma costava troppo e si è accontentato di una solida bici Cinese di seconda mano. Salutando mi ha detto che ci vedremo Venerdì. Chi sa quando si presenterà anche Theara, ho una grande voglia di abbracciarla. / As I’m on my way, already late for my tuk-tuk I stop short, My boy Bunthy has appeared. What a serious young man he has become. I ask him how his exams went today. He explains that it was a monthly exam of all the school materials and he came 18th out of 48, yes that’s not a misprint, 48 in a class! I tell him that’s good, I’m pleased but to try even harder because I know he has it in him. As we leave he proudly shows me he still has the bicycle I gave him two years ago, when we bought it he would have liked a mountain bike but they were too expensive so he settled for a good solid secondhand Chinese one, on saying goodbye he said he would see me on Friday, I wonder when Theara will show up, I am longing to see her.

Con i miei scuse a Mr Dom per il ritardo ed un ultimo saluta a Vannak che mi aspetta sempre, questa volta insieme a tre ragazze   salgo sul mio Bond machine e partiamo per Spring Valley. La strada, è già la famosa, famosissima strada, è finito? Figuriamoci, il pezzo che era stato asfaltato con una bella aiuola in mezzo in Febbraio è ancora lì, ma il resto è stato tirato su ancora e certe pezzi sono come le montagne russe. Non sarà più un avventura una volta che sarà finito. Ma mi sa che vorrà ancora parecchie anni. / I excuse myself to Mr Dom for being so late and say a last goodbye to Vannak who always waits for me to leave, this time with three of the bigger girls. I climb into my Bond car and off we set for Spring Valley. The road, the already famous, very famous road, is it finished yet? Your joking, the bit that had been asphalted  with a bank of flowers down the middle in February is okay but the rest has been taken up again and in some paces is like the a roller coaster. There  will be no adventure left when it is finished. But I think that will take a few years yet!
