Alle nove saluto lo staff dell’albergo, carichiamo una valigia di 20 kg ed uno vuoto più lo zaino più lo scatolone per gli offerte della quale non si trova più la chiave su il povero tuk-tuk. / At nine I say goodbye to the hotel staff, they load my 20 kg. suitcase plus and empty one and my rucksack plus the collection box of which no one can find the key onto the poor tuk-tuk. 

Arrivato al centro Mr Dom, con l’aiuto dei bambini portano tutto attraverso i campi fino al Centro. Non partiamo subito per Phnom Penh le insegnanti vogliano prepararmi un pranzo speciale. / On arrival at the center Mr Dom, with some help from the children takes it all through the rice fields to the center. We are not leaving for Phnom Penh straight away as the lady teachers want to prepare me a special lunch.

C’è Theara ed un’amica, che evidentemente oggi non devano andare a scuola, che preparano delle verdure. Kimlan, la nostra giovanissima insegnante che taglia il pollo. In considerazione del fatto che tutte le donne insegnanti stanno cucinando rimane solo Mr. Socheat per insegnare a tre classe, cosa impossibile. Tiriamo fuori il fedele TV, mi faccio consegnare la chiavetta USB da Channa che è l’unica custode, e mettiamo i bambini intorno a guardare i soliti canzoni. Oramai li conoscano quasi tutti e li incoraggio a cantare insieme. Loro si divertano, non lo sanno che stanno anche imparando, forse di più che durante una lezione. / Theara was there with a friend, obviously they have no school today, they were preparing vegetables, Kimlan, out youngest teacher, was chopping up chicken. In consideration of the fact that all the women teachers were busy cooking that only left Mr Socheat with three classes to teach, impossible. Well get out our faithful TV, I collect the USB keys from Channa, one and only holder, and get all the children together to watch the songs. By now they know most of them and I encourage them to sing along. They are enjoying themselves, and don’t realise that they are also learning, probably a lot more than during a lesson.

Alla fine, duranti i saluti, consegno gli ultimi due premi per migliore studente della classe. Sono sbalordite più che orgoglioso e vedo che dopo tutti stanno esaminando il dizionario e puzzle che ho dato come premi. / At the end, during the goodbyes, I give the last two prizes to the best student in the class. They are amazed rather than proud and afterwards I see them all studying the dictionary and puzzle that consisted in the prizes.

Questo è seguito da un evento ancora più grande, viene consegnata una favolosa bicicletta a Sokheng, il regalo di compleanno dai suoi sponsor. Il ragazzo non ha parole, lo guarda con occhi increduli. Ma non è finito perché c’è anche una torta. Ordinata da Channa. Bellissimo con il sorriso di A Smile for Cambodia. Che idea stupenda che ha avuto. Sokkea chiede al ragazzo se vuole portarw la torta a casa dalla famiglia o dividerlo con i compagni. E siccome qui è stato insegnato di dividere tutto opta per mangiarlo al istante con i compagni. Grande eccitazione e la prima fetta viene offerta a me come ospite. Niente panna questa volta. / This is followed by an even bigger event, a fantastic bicycle is given to Sokheng for his birthday. The boy is speechless, he just looks at it wide eyed. But it’s not finished because there is also a cake. Ordered by Channa. Beautiful with the A Smile for Cambodia smile. What a wonderful idea she had had. Sokkea asks the boy if he wants to take it home or share it with his friends. Being as here they are taught to share he chooses to eat it with his school friends. Great excitement and the first slice is given to me as the guest. No cream this time.

Ricarichiamo la bicicletta sul tuk-tuk di Mr Dom che è apparso dal nulla. Ha ragione di avere voluto una bicicletta, abita lontanissima dalla scuola. Scaricato la bici lo monta subito e va giù il sentiero che porta a casa sua. Escono i genitori e la sorella, anche essa nel centro, eccitati quanto il ragazzo. Fa dei giri in cortile per permetterci di fare delle foto. La famiglia ha appena ricostruito la casa, piccolo ed in mattoni come si usa adesso, ma dicono che fa un caldo tremendo nel interno. Certo il vecchio metodo sarà stato costoso e andava rinnovato ogni tanto ma se i vecchi hanno costruito così un motivo ci sarà stato. Alla nostra partenza la mamma ci carica un sacchetto di arachidi che stava togliendo dalle piante. Ma esagera. Dom li riprende e rimette la metta nel loro cesto. Saluti, saluti, saluti e riprendiamo la strada di ritorno. / The bicycle goes once more onto Mt Dom’s tuk-tuk, he has appeared from nowhere. He was right to want a bike, his house is a very long way from school. Once unloaded he gets straight on and rides down the path to his house. His parents and sister come out, she also frequents our center, excited as much as the boy. He takes a spin round the yard so we can take photos. The family has just rebuilt the house, very small and in brick as they do nowadays, but they say it is very hot inside. When we were leaving the mother filled a bag with peanuts that they were busy stripping from the plants. But she exaggerated. Dom takes them and puts half back in their basket. Ma vedo una casa, chiamarla casa e un esagerazione, è una scatola di cemento con porte di ondulato, praticamente un garage, ma per loro casa! Fuori sono distesi tantissimi arachidi ad asciugare ed è questo che attira la mia attenzione. Poi vedo una ragazza e chiedo a Channa se è una delle nostre. A risposta affermativa chiedo se ci possiamo fermare. Andiamo a visitare la famiglia, almeno mamma e due figlie. L’interno della casa è peggio del esterno veramente un garage con dentro di tutto. Ma hanno un bagno esterno e anche un pozzo per cioè in qualche modo sono fortunati. Hanno un piccolo orto e dei maialini che la signora dici non crescano e non sa perché. Sono felicissimi della nostra visita ed anche io, ma è ancora una prova che senza il nostro piccolo aiuto la vita per queste famiglie sarebbe ancora più dura, ma più dura di così non riesco ad immaginare. / But I see a house, calling it a house is a bit of an exaggeration,  it’s a cement box with a corrugated iron door, practically a garage, but for them their house. They are very happy to receive our visit and the same goes for me, but it’s one more proof that without the little help we can give these people’s lives would be even harder, though it’s difficult to imagine anything harder than this.

Al Centro e tutto pronto per mangiare, tanti piatti su i tavoli nuovi fuori della biblioteca, pollo arrosto, pollo con zenzero, più zenzero che pollo, che bontà. Gamberi con taccole che crescano nel orto e logicamente riso, tanto riso. / At the center everything was ready for eating, lots of dishes laid out on the new tables outside the library, roast chicken, chicken with ginger, more ginger than chicken it was so good. Shrimps with taccoli that are grown in our garden, and obviously rice, lots of rice.

Sokkea dici a Theara e la sua amica di venire a mangiare con noi, non vogliano, si vergognano, ma lui insiste. Si siedano vicino a me a testa bassa e prendano solo riso anche se chiedo se vogliano questo è quello, scuotano la testa. Anche Mr. Dom è stato invitato, ormai fa parte dello staff! Abbiamo appena cominciato a mangiare che inizia a piovere. Via tutto sotto l’aula esterno. È tutto buonissimo e adesso anche le ragazze cominciano a mangiare. / Sokkea tells Theara and her friend to come and eat with us but they don’t want to. They are shy, but he insists. They come and sit near me, heads down and take only rice even when I ask if they want this or that, they shake their heads. Mr Dom has been invited too, by now he is one of the staff! We had just started to eat when it began to rain. Every body with food run under the outside classroom. It really is all good and now the girls start to eat too.

Alle 14,30 arriva la macchina che porterà Sokkea e me a Phnom Penh. Caricano le miei valigie e questa volta è veramente ciao. Abbraccio tutte le insegnante, Kimlan si mette a piangere e così anche io. Abbraccio la mia Theara e la sua amica e partiamo. / At 2,30 pm the car arrives which will take Sokkea and I to Phnom Penh. They load all my suitcases and this time it really is goodbye. I hug all the teachers, Kimlan starts to cry and so do I. I give a big hug to my Theara and her friend and we set off. 

Sono stanchissima. In macchina fa troppo rumore per parlare con Sokkea che si siede davanti ed io dietro, così, nonostante una strada pessima, pieno di buchi, non è quello solito, dormo per quasi tutto il viaggio. / I am tired out, the car is too noisy for me to talk with Sokkea as he is sitting in the front and me in the back so, despite the bad road, full of holes, it’s not the usual one, I sleep for nearly all of the journey.

Arrivato in albergo do appuntamento con Sokkea per fare le spese il giorno dopo al Russian Market. Inutile darlo un orario. Lo dico che arriverò con un tuk-tuk e quando arrivò lo chiamo, se riesco caricare il telefono che è ancora senza soldi. In serata mi manda un numero, ha comperato lui una scheda di un dollaro, devo solo inserire il codice che mi ha mandato. Si sente sempre responsabile di me. / On arriving in the hotel I give Sokkea an appointment for the following day at the Russian Market. Hopeless giving an hour. So I just say that I will go there with a tuk-tuk and ring him when I get there, if I can manage to put more money on my phone card that is once more empty. Later he sends me a message with a number, he got me a recharge for a dollar, all I have to do is type in code he has sent me. He always feels so responsible for me.

Allora una cena leggera in albergo e a letto. Domani mi aspetta una giornata divertente ma faticosa. / So a light dinner in the hotel and bed. Tomorrow an entertaining but tiring day awaits me.
