Che bello. Stamattina a colazione c’erano due famiglie, Americane/Australiane tutti lavoratori di un NGO a Phnom Penh. Una copia avevano un bellissimo bambino con i capelli biondo quasi bianco come i miei quando ero piccola. Aveva solo 16 mesi e visto che loro sono in Cambogia da 13 sono arrivati quando lui era piccolissimo. Sono riuscita a scambiare quattro parole ma dovevo partirà per il centro e oggi loro tornano a Phnom Penh. Peccato di non averli incontrati prima e sì che erano nelle due camere sotto di me. Ma con questa pioggia e non essere venuta a mangiare ci siamo visti solo di passaggio. / How wonderful. At breakfast this morning there were two American/Australian families all NGO workers in Phnom Penh. One couple had a beautiful small boy with hair so blonde it was almost white, just like mine as a child. He was 16 months old and being as they have been in Cambodia 13 months he must have been tiny when they came. I managed to exchange a few words but I had to leave for the center and they go back to Phnom Penh today. Pity I didn’t meet them sooner as they were in the two rooms below me. But with the rain and me not going to the restaurant to eat we just passed each other once or twice.

La pioggia continua a cadere e a volte diluviare. Adesso il panorama è cambiato, non più campi con zolle di terrà giallastri secche ma tutto allagato e adesso ci sono i contadini che arano e preparano i campi. In alcuni ci sono già i mazzi di pianti di riso pronti ad essere ripiantate. In alcuni i bambini stanno cercando pesci o granchi. Cambia tutto. / The rain continues to fall and at times pour down. Now the scenery has changed, no longer fields with lumps of yellowish dry earth, it is all flooded and the farmers are out plowing and preparing the fields. In some there are already bunches of rice plants ready to be replanted. In others children are looking for fish or crabs. Everything has changed.

Su i banchi sono stese impermeabile ad asciugare. Le moto sono coperte in qualche modo contro il bagnato ma ci pensa il vento a scoprirli. / On the desks plastic raincoats or capes are laid out to dry. The motorbikes are covered in a certain way against getting wet but the wind has different thoughts and removes the coverage.

Quando i bambini vanno a casa li vedo nel campo pieno d’acqua, penso che sono caduti dentro invece stanno lavando le biciclette. Bel l’idea con acqua così fangoso. Ridano sotto l’acqua, sanno anche loro che per la campagna questa significa vita, lavoro, qualcosa da mangiare. / When the children go home I can see them in the field full of water, I think they have slipped in but no they are washing their bikes. Not a very good idea in such muddy water. They laugh under the rain, even they know that for the countryside this means life, work and something to eat.

Ma ci sono meno bambini oggi. Probabilmente  i genitori li hanno tenuti a casa ad aiutare nei campi, non credo proprio che è a causa della pioggia, sono abituati. / Today the children are less than usual. Probably their parents have kept them at home to work in the fields, I really don’t think it’s because it is raining, they are used to it.

Nonostante il campo allagato i bambini si sono messi in righe per pulire i denti. Chi sa perché per loro è un divertimento. / Despite the water logged play area the children are lined up to clean their teeth. I wonder why they think it’s fun.

Invece io ho un grosso problema. Per alcuni giorni non ho accesso l’aria condizionata perché non faceva caldo. Ma adesso mi serve per asciugare il bucato perché l’aria è talmente umido, invece non va. Probabilmente un danno durante uno dei temporali. Lavo i vestiti che portò di giorno quando arrivò in albergo e faccio la doccia. Poi gli arrotolo nell’asciugamano utilizzato per la doccia per strizzarli. Appendo e il giorno dopo sono asciutti. Ma adesso ho due paia di pantaloni e due magliette appesi ad asciugare ed uno da lavare. Mi rimane solo un paio di pantaloni “di lavoro” . Sta diventando un problema seria. Hanno mandato un tecnico che l’ha fatto funzionare ma dopo cinque minuti ha smesso ancora. Hanno promesso che domani verrà aggiustato. Altrimenti non mi rimane che cambiare camera. / But I have a big problem. For some days I haven’t turned on the air conditioning as it was not hot. But now I need it to dry my washing because the air is so humid, logically it’s not working. It was probably damaged during one of the thunder storms. I wash out the clothes I have been wearing during the day when I get back to the hotel and have a shower. I then roll them in the towel I have used for the shower to wring them out. Hang them up and the next day they are dry. At the moment I have two pairs of trousers and two t-shirts hanging up to dry and one to wash. Now I only have one pair of “working” trousers left. That’s a serious problem. They have sent the handyman who got it to work but five minutes later it stopped again. They have promised that tomorrow they will send somebody to fix it. Otherwise my only solution is to change rooms.

Solita cena solitario. Per fortuna ho da scrivere il diario, colpa della solitudine se mi allungo troppo.
A domani. / Usual solitary supper. It’s a good job I have my diary to write, it’s the fault of solitude if I go on for too long.Until tomorrow.
