Domenica è il giorno fissato per portare tre bambini a mangiare al ristorante, i miei due e quella di una mia amica. / Sunday is the day fixed for taking three children to eat in a restaurant, my two and a friends sponsored girl. 

Piove sempre ma riesco andare al ristorante. Stamattina ci sono parecchie persone essendo fine settimana. Faccio una colazione “leggera” pane al cioccolata con banane, deliziosi. / It’s still raining, but I make it to the restaurant. This morning there are a lot of people with it being the weekend. I have a “light” breakfast of chocolate bread with bananas, delicious!

La mia intenzioni iniziali erano di andare a piede al crab market. Ma il tempo è troppo imprevedibile. Piove sempre ma a volte diluvia proprio. Ma ho mandato Mr Dom al centro per prendere i ragazzi, Channa e anche un Chanta, ex insegnante con il quale sono rimasta in amicizia. Allora chiamo un suo amico che a volte lo sostituisce quando lui è occupato. Arriviamo con molto difficoltà a causa del traffico di grosse macchine targate Phnom Penh che oltre ad essere grossi vogliono parcheggiare il più vicino al coperto a causa della pioggia. Un poliziotto cerca di mettere un po’ di ordine ma non lo dà retta nessuno. / My initial intention had been to walk down to the crab market. But the weather is too unpredictable. It continues raining and at times pours down. But I have sent Mr. Dom to the center to pick up the children, Channa and Chanta, an ex teacher with whom I have stayed friends. So I call one of his friends who sometimes comes if Dom is busy, to take me. We arrive with some difficulty caused by the traffic of big cars with Phnom Penh registrations, as well as being big they are all trying to park as near to the covered market as possible because of the rain. A traffic policeman is trying to get them in order but nobody is listening to him.

Arriviamo a Mr Mab, chiuso, ancora. Il mio autista chiama Dom per un consiglio su un altro ristorante. Scendo e vado a leggere il menù. Il menù va bene la vista dell’interno non è così bello ma poi sono tutti più o meno uguali. / We arrive at Mr Mab and it is closed, again. My driver calls Dom for recommendations on another restaurant. I get out and go and look at the menu. It looks okay even though from here the inside doesn’t look so great but they are all more or less the same.

Il proprietario viene a parlare con me. Guarda caso va a università con Mr To il nostro prima insegnate che adesso lavoro alla scuola di Don Bosco. Gentilmente vanno a comperare mi una ricarica per il mio telefono $1, dovrebbe bastarmi fino alla fine del mio soggiorno. / The owner comes to talk with me and I discover he goes to university with Mr To our very first teacher who now works at Don Bosco. They kindly go and buy me a recharge card for my mobile phone, $1 that should last me to the end of my stay.

Arriva Mr Dom con il suo carico umano. Scendano tutti sorridenti. Channa è tutto in tiro con pantaloni neri e maglia rosso ed i capelli sciolti, di solito li porta a coda di cavallo per lavorare. I ragazzi non sono mai stati in un ristorante, un ristorante che da sul mare poi è il massimo. Theara ha subito trovato un cancello che dava su una scaletta che portava al mare. Per fortuna si è limitata a sedersi sul primo gradino e per fortuna era bassa marea. Nonostante non avevano mai avuta a che fare con un ristorante si sono messi eccitati a leggere il menù. Bunthy e Theara sono decisi Samphors, che è più piccola e comunque più timida, si è lasciato guidare, o comandare se vogliamo da Theara. I piatti erano enormi ma hanno finito tutto, all’infuori dei frullati che forse hanno scelto senza sapere cos’erano. In un piatto c’erano rami di pepe verde e Samphors mi ha guardato inorridita quando mi ha visto mangiarli tutti. Sono così buoni. Questa regione e famoso per il pepe. / Mr. Dom arrives with his load of humans. They get out smiling. Channa is very elegant in black trousers and a red top with her hair hanging loose, usually at work she wears it in a pony tail. The children have never been to a restaurant before and a restaurant by the sea is a non plus ultra. it doesn’t take Theara long find a little gate in the low wall that gives on to some small steps. Fortunately she limited herself to sitting on the top step, and fortunately there was a low tide. Despite the fact of never having been to a restaurant they excitedly set to reading the menu. Bunthy and Theara were more decisive, Samphors, who is younger and timid, let Theara guide or shall we say command her. The dishes of food were very big but they finished it all, all except a milkshake they had ordered but probably didn’t know what it was. In one dish there were sprigs of green pepper, Samphors was horrified to see me eat them all. They are so good. This region is famous for its pepper.

Pagato il conto di soli $40 per un pranzo per 6 persone, abbiamo fatto una passeggiata fino al mercato del granchio con Theara che portava spavalda il mio zaino di montagna adeguatamente con coperta per la pioggia. A causa della pioggia non c’erano molti bancarelle ma abbiamo trovata una zia di Theara con una bancarella di giochi ed una zia di Channa che vendeva non mi ricordo cosa. / Having paid the bill of just $40 per a meal for six people, we walked down to the crab market with Theara strutting with my rucksack complete with rain cover. Due to the rain there were less stalls than usual but we still found one of Theara’s aunts at a stall selling toys and an aunt of Channa but I can’t remember what she was selling.

Chanta doveva tornare a Kampot a università ed io dovevo essere al centro per fare un lezione ai ragazzi della scuola secondaria perciò chiamiamo Mr Dom e torniamo a Domnak Chamboak. I ragazzi tornano a casa, Theara indossando la mia impermeabile che senz’altro non avrei mai messo dopo la prima esperienza e gli altri due sfidando gli elementi. / Chanta had to go back to university in Kampot and I had to go to the center for a lesson with secondary school children so I called Mr. Dom and we went back to Domnak Chambok. My three children go home, Theara wearing my plastic raincoat which I would probably never have worn again after the first experience, the other two braving the elements.

C’è anche Mr To pronto a dare lezioni d’inglese ai ragazzi della secondaria, ma visto che ci sono io e visto che comunque o si sono dimenticate o a causa della pioggia sono arrivati solo 4 bellissime ragazze lui torna a Don Bosco. / Mr. To was also at the center ready to give lessons to the secondary school students but seeing as they had forgotten or because of the rain, only four beautiful girls turned up he went back to Don Bosco.

Faccio un interrogazione alle ragazze poi spiego alcuni regole di grammatica e faccio delle prove. Sanno bene le regole ma come solito il problema è la conversazione. Sanno come scrivere ma trovano più difficile leggere. Oltre alla difficoltà è anche la timidezza. Purtroppo avrò solo un altra Domenica con loro, mi sarebbe piaciuto iniziare subito. / I give the girls a short interrogation then explain some grammar and a test. Their grammar is good, as usual the problem is conversation. They know how to write but find reading difficult. Add to the difficulty they are also shy. Unfortunately I’ll only have one more Sunday with them, I would have liked to start as soon as I had arrived.

Il viaggio di ritorno a Kep era allucinante, per me, chi sa per Dom che era all’esterno su la moto. Raffiche di vento rischiavano di buttarci fuori strada, la quale ormai è pieno di buche per non dire voragine. Le auto che passano ad alta velocità suonando come pazzi non aiutano la situazione. Mi sembra interminabile eppure arriviamo sani e salvi. / The return journey to Kep was terrifying, for me, heaven knows for Mr. Dom outside on the motorbike. Gusts of wind threatened to blow us off the road, which by now is fill of holes not to say craters. Cars pass at high speed blowing their horns like mad which doesn’t help the situation. It seems never ending yet we get there safe and sound.

Subito in camera a scrivere, poi visto che diluvia sempre e che alle 19 iniziava la F1 un altra cena saltata. Tanto ho mangiato bene a mezzogiorno. / Straight to my room to write, then in consideration of the fact that it was still pouring down and that at 7 pm the Gran Prix was starting another missed dinner. Doesn’t matter, I ate well at lunch time.

Sapete una cosa? Parlo io tutto il giorno per insegnare ai ragazzi, parlo in un inglese stento con lo staff del centro, con Mr Dom e lo staff dell’albergo, ma mi manca una bella chiacchierata, in inglese o italiano non importa. / Do you know something? I talk all day teaching English to the children, speak pigeon English to the staff in the center, with Mr. Dom and with the hotel staff, but I do so miss a good chat, in English or Italian it doesn’t matter.
