Tutto tranquillo al centro stamattina. Sokkea è tornato a Phnom Penh e Sothea ha dovuto andare a casa, così siamo in 4/5 donne. / All calm at the center this morning. Sokkea has gone back to Phnom Penh and Sothea has had to go to his home town, so there are just 4/5 women. 

Alla mattina prendo il solito classe di piccoli. Anche Channa è venuta a vedere. Sono talmente piccoli anche se devano avere almeno sei anni che se devono scrivere su la lavagna devo metterli in piedi su una sedia. Solo uno è grande ed è anche molto indietro, ma lui ed un suo amico parlano sempre durante la lezione e oggi sono stata “cattiva. Siccome hanno una fila di tavoli bassi devono star seduti per terra, non so se è una scelta loro, una cosa culturale o una imposizione dell’insegnante ma le ragazze stanno da una parte e i ragazzi dall’altra. Così per separare i due disattenti ho mandato uno da la parte delle ragazze. Ma nonostante tutto ci mettano l’anima. / In the morning I take on the usual class of little ones. Even Channa came to watch. Despite the fact they should be at least six years old they are so small that when I get them to write on the board I have to give then a chair to stand on. Only one is quite big and he is a little backwards, but he and a friend are always talking during the lessons and today I was very “cruel”. They have a row of very low tables and they have to sit on the floor, and wether it is their choice or custom or the centres rules the girls sit on one side and the boys on the other. So with the necessity to separate two boys I had to send one to sit on the girls side. But I have to say that despite everything they put their hearts into it.

All’inizio pausa pranzo lezione con solo le tre signore, per essere corrette una signora e due signorine. Verbi comuni, irregolari ma nel presente perfetto sono regolare. Hanno visto quanto è facile usare i verbi inglesi, solo due variazioni, quello normale e la terza persona. Hanno fatto in fretta a capire ed io ho cercato di pronunciare le parole Cambogiani corrispondente dal mio libricino di frase.  Siamo passati a domande e risposti breve per permetterci a fare un po di conversazione. ” hai un fidanzato e se sposata?” Tanto a due sapevo la risposta, ma quando ho chiesti quanti sorelli e fratelli hanno cominciano a contare su le dita. Due fanno parte di una famiglia con 9 fra sorelle e fratelli, solo Channa ha due fra fratelli e sorelle. Quando dico che non sono sposata e non ho un fidanzato, sorridano ma quando dico che ho due figli mi guardano perplessi e scandalizzate. Spiego che sono Theara e Bunthy e ridano sollevati. Bene significa che qualcosa hanno capito. / So at the start of the lunch break I had an all female teachers lesson. Common verbs, irregular but in the present they are regular.  They realised how easy English verbs can be, only two variations, with the general rule and the third person. They understood very quickly and I tried to pronounce the translation in Khmer taken from my little phrase book. We passed on to questions and answers so that we could do a bit of conversation. “Have you got a fiancée or are you married?” I knew the answers anyway, but when I asked how many children in their family they started counting on their fingers. Two are part of a family of nine children, only Channa is part of a family with three children. When I say I am not married and don’t have a boyfriend they smile, but when I say I have two children they look shocked and perplexed. I explainn that “my” children are Bunthy and Theara and they laugh, relieved. That’s a good sign it means they have understood.

Che spavento durante la pausa. Alcuni ragazzi si erano messi a far finta di prendersi a bastonate, almeno a me sembrava così. Picchiavano i bastoni per terra rincorrendosi e ridendo. Quando mi sembrava che il gioco era durata abbastanza e stava diventando un po pericolosa mi sono avvicinata. Kimlan, che era l’unica altra persona adulta nel centro oltre a me mi ha spiegato che c’era un serpente. Spavalda mi sono avvicinata, lei ha paura. Certo che dopo tutti quei bastonati era più che morto, anzi era quasi spaccato in due, per fortuna, sempre meglio, i bambini avevano paura, allora dimostrando il mio coraggio (leggete incoscienza) l’ho tirato su con un bastone e buttato oltre il recinto. Una bambina, che mi sta sempre attaccata mi chiama “Jane,Jane” e indica il recinto. Infatti il povero cadavere era rimasto appesa. L’ho fatto sparire nel campo, anche perché non volevo che altri bambini si spaventavano. / Bit of a fright during the lunch pause. Some boys started playing at mock beating each other with sticks, at least that’s what it looked like to me. They were chasing each other and beating the sticks on the ground laughing. When I decided the game had gone on long enough and was getting a little dangerous I went closer. Kimlan, who was the only other adult in the center apart from me explained there was a snake. Courageously  I went nearer as she was afraid. Certainly after all that beating it was more than dead, in fact it was almost squashed in two. Fortunately , and better still, the children were afraid too, so showing all my bravery (read fool hardiness) I picked it up on the end of a long stick and threw it over the fence. One little girl who is my shadow called out “Jane, Jane” pointing to the fence, in fact the poor defunct was hanging there. I sent him flying into the field, also because I didn’t want the other children to see it and be afraid.

Inizio la mia classe sempre con i fogli di lavora. E caos, un continuo “teacher I’ve finished” “teacher me” “teacher”. Alcuni sono molto più bravi di altri logicamente e fanno tutti i fogli senza chiamarmi, altri, chiamano, vogliano esser assicurati, si arrabbiano con se stessi quando faccio vedere che hanno sbagliato. Alla fine raccolgo ancora tutti i fogli e ho appena finito di correggerli per la lezione di oggi pomeriggio. Adesso sono nella così detta pausa pranzo. Solo che per qualche motivo io non pauso mai. Per fortuna quel tesoro di Channa mi porta sempre un caffè ghiacciato, nero senza zucchero che mi sostiene durante il pomeriggio. / I start my first afternoon class once again with the work sheets. It’s chaos, a continuos “teacher I have finished”, “teacher me”, “teacher”. Some are cleverer and logically did all of the sheets without help from me without calling out, others, call, wamt to be helped and reassured and are angry with themselves when they make silly mistakes. At the end of the lesson I gather up all the work sheets promising to correct them and give then back today. Now It is the so called lunch break. Just that for some reason I never seem to get a break. Fortunately there is Channa who always brings me an iced black coffee that keeps me going through the afternoon.

Per la seconda lezione devo abbandonare i miei piccoli per sostituire Sothea con una classe media. Una classe che mi conosce già è sono contentissime. Giochiamo con i flash cards e mi accorgo che un maschio ed una femmina sono molto più bravi delle altre, ma l’avevo già notato all’inizio dell’anno. Ma c’è una ragazza nuova che non sa le parole ma scrive tutto senza che io la dico e mi fa ripetere mille volte per essere sicura della pronuncia. Alla fine della lezione, a grande richiesta, il solito “head, shoulders”, da fuori rincorrano altri bambini ad assistere o partecipare. / For the second lesson I have to abandon my little ones and take over Sotheas’ medium class. It’s a class that already knows me from my last visit and they are very happy to have me back. We play with flash cards and I notice that one boy and one girl are much better than the others, but I had already noticed that last time. But there is a new girl who doesn’t know the words but writes them all down without my saying, then asks me a thousand times to repeat the pronunciation until she is sure of it. At the end of the lesson, by great request, the usual “head, shoulder”, other children come running to watch or join in.

Poi trovo Theara che mi aspetta come promessa Domenica e insieme un amica. Quando le faccio vedere la borsa piena di filo di seta per fare i braccialetti dell’amicizia non crede ai suoi occhi. Mi chiede quale preferisco, un grigio perla con lilla, non è d’accordo ma la scelta è mia. Si mette subito all’opera, cercando l’inizio della matassa poi tagliando diverse lunghezze. Dopo non ho visto perché sono stata chiamata al dovere di distribuire materiale a ragazzi assenti Domenica.  Ma quando ho finito la cerco e mi fa vedere cosa ha fatto fino adesso. È bellissimo e vederla fare sembra così facile. La spiego che ho comperato talmente tanto filo perché lei è suoi amici possano fare le braccialetti, tenerli o regalarli agli amici o a gente che viene a visitare il centro. Altrimenti porto un po’ in Italia per la nostra pesca bambine. / Then I find Theara with a friend waiting for me as she had promised on Sunday. When I show her the bag of silk strand I have bought her to make friendship bracelets she can’t believe her eyes. She asks me which colours I prefer. I choose a pearl grey and lilac,she doesn’t agree but it’s my choice. She gets straight down to work, looking for the start of the strand then cutting off a number of long pieces. After that I didn’t see as I was called to duty giving out material to those who had been absent on Sunday. But when I have finished I go and look for her to see how far she has got. It’s beautiful and to watch her do it she makes it look so easy. I explain that I have brought such a lot of string so that she and her friends can make braclets, to keep to give away to friends or people who visit the center. Anther wise I will take some back to Italy to put in the lucky dip for girls.

Finito, Mr Dom non c’è, avevo detto le 17 e sono in anticipo allora piano, piano a causa dell’affa cominciò camminare verso la strada statale. Un po di moto non mi farà del male. Lungo la strada passano bambini in bici, alcuni mi conoscano e salutano, altri mi guardano con curiosità. Sono nell’albergo, stanca, sudata e posso dire leggermente puzzolente. Per fortuna è anche purtroppo credo di essere l’unica ospite nel albergo essendo bassa stagione. Ma nonostante le nuvole e continue tuoni ha piovuto poco fino adesso. Non so se è un bene o un male. Ieri sera dopo un solitario cena era veramente piacevole star seduta sul balcone a scrivere il diario, un bel vento fresco ma meglio del freddo del aria condizionato della stanza. / Finished. Mt. Dom hasn’t arrived as I had told him 5pm and I’m early so slowly, slowly I start to walk down towards the main road. A bit of exercise won’t do me any harm. Along the way children on bikes pass me, some of them know me and say “hello” others look at me in curiosity. I’m in the hotel. Tired, sweaty and I may say a little smelly. Fortunately, or not, as the case may be I think I am the only person in the hotel as it il low season. But despite the clouds and continuous thunder it hasn’t rained much so far. I don’t know wether that is a good or bad thing. Last night after a solitary dinner it was very pleasant sitting on the balcony writing my diary with a fresh breeze. Much better than the air conditioning in my room.
