Sabato giornata vicino alla piscina, scrivendo il diario, facendo conti e inviando foto dei bambini per I sponsor. Domenica invece sono andata a Kampot, la città più vicino, con tre ragazze per fare spese da parte dei loro sponsor miei amici. Di solito, giustamente, devo avere un membro dello staff ad accompagnarmi. Quest’anno visto che tutto lo staff va a università di sabato e domenica avevo intenzione di andare da sola, poi mi e stato concesso l’onore di fiducia in me e Mr Dom di potere andare da soli ma una volta arrivati siamo andati ad incontrare Channa durante la sua pausa pranzo. Ma non so se Dom era in ritardo o aveva dimenticato del tutto. Io ero un po’ in anticipo ed invece di aspettare fuori dell’albergo mi sono portata fino alla strada principale dove dopo qualche minuti l’ho visto arrivare ma con il tuk-tuk carico di aglio, chili ed altri verdure. Si era dimenticato e solo per caso l’ho trovato. Era andato a fare la spesa per un cliente che fa le salse da vendere. / Saturday a day by the swimming pool, writing my diary, keeping accounts and sending photos for the sponsors. But Sunday I went to Kampot, the nearest town, with three children to do some shopping on behalf of their sponsor all friends of mine. Usually, and quite rightly, I have to have one of the staff to accompany me. This year, because all of the staff are going to university on Saturday and Sunday I had intended going on my own, then I was given the honour of trust in myself and Mr Dom to go without escort but once we arrived we met Channa during her lunch break. But I don’t know wether Dom was late or had forgotten but I was a little early so instead of waiting outside the hotel I walked down to the main road where after a few minutes I saw him arriving with the tuk-tuk full of garlic, chilli peppers and other vegetables. He had forgotten and it was pure chance that I met him. He had been shopping for a client who makes sauces to sell.

Per prima siamo andati al mercato coperto, una sauna. Abbiamo dovuto girare alcuni bancarelle prima che trovavo uno che sembrava avere qualcosa che accontentavano le due ragazze. Samphors voleva un vestito ed ha scelto una in stoffa di jeans con sotto un t-shirt bianco. Reaksa, che non era mai stata in città,  era così frastornata che non sapeva da che parte girarsi. Ci ha pensato Channa con un paio di jeans ed una bella camicia. Avrei voluto anche una giacca di jeans ma erano tutte troppo grande. Come il mio solito ho mercanteggiato sul prezzo fino ad ottenere lo sconto di $1 e tre t-shirts gratis! Fuori, di corsa. / First of all we went to the covered market, a sauna. We had to go round a few stalls before I found one that I thought had something that would satisfy the two girls. Samphors wanted a dress and settles for one in denim with a white t-shirt underneath. Reaksa, who had never been into town, was so confused she didn’t know which way to turn. Channa settled it by finding a pair of jeans and a nice blouse. I had wanted a denim jacket too but they were all too big. As usual I haggled over the price and managed to get a $1 discount and three free t-shirts, Out, at a run.

Avevamo tutti bisogno di bere qualcosa allora siamo fermati ad un chiosco all’angolo di una strada a prendere vari tipi di frappe al caffè, con tanto ghiaccio mi raccomando. Dovrei già essere defunta con tutte le cose che faccio che non dovrei fare ma eccomi viva e vegeta. Era tardi e abbiamo riportato Channa alla sua università perché doveva anche mangiare prima delle lezioni pomeridiane. / We all needed something to drink so we stopped at a corner kiosk and ordered different types of coffee milkshakes, with a lot of ice please. I should be dead by now with all the things I do that I shouldn’t but here I am alive and kicking. It was late and we took Channa back to her university so she could have a bite to eat before the afternoon lessons.

Lasciati da soli siamo andati al negozio di biciclette. Qui vendano biciclette nuove scintille che tutti mi dicono di non comperare perché sono fatti in Vietnam o Tailandia e non sono buone, e quelli usati, rigorosamente cinese, grandi, robuste e sempre verniciati in argento. Dalin e una ragazza già grande allora la bici Cinese non era un problema. Ha guardato bene, scelta e chiesta un cambio di sella. Hanno pulito tutto, messo olio su la catena, una protezione su la ruota posteriore in modo che non rimane dentro la gonna e in mano l’hanno dato un cesto da montare su il manubrio per mettere dentro la borsa di scuola, o la spesa. Poi e stato legato al tuk-tuk. Ma Dom e il venditore sono esperti in questo. Non so quanti biciclette ho comperato da loro. / Left on our own we went to the bicycle shop. Here they sell shining new bicycles which everybody advises me not to buy as they are made in Vietnam or Thailand and aren’t any good, then the secondhand ones, rigorously Chinese, big, strong  and always painted silver. Dalin is a tall girl so the Chinese bikes were no problem for her. She looked carefully chose and asked for the saddle to be changed. They cleaned it up, put oil on the chain, protectors on the back wheel so that her skirt doesn’t get caught in it and handed her a basket to put on the front handle bars for her school bag or shopping. It was then tied to the back of the tuk-tuk. But Mr Dom and the owner are quite expert at this. I’ve lost count of the number of bicycles I’ve bought from them.

Dovevamo andare nella cartoleria dove Channa si fornisce ma Lunedì iniziava il Capo d’anno Cinese e il negozio era chiuso e libero di tutta la merce. Adesso non chiedetemi cosa c’entra il capodanno Cinese con la Cambogia, centra, centra. Forse perché tanti Cambogiani sono d’origine Cinese, certamente con il flusso di business Chinese diventerà una colonia! Poi celebrano anche il nostro capodanno, e si perché per tanti anni e stato una colonia Francese allora mettiamoci anche Natale. Ma il più grosso festa e il capodanno Khmer. L’occasione quando scambiano regali e dura quasi una settimana. / We should have gone to the book shop where Channa buys things for school but Chinese New Year starts on Monday and it was closed and totally empty. Now don’t ask me what Chinese New Year has to do with Cambodia but it does. Maybe a lot of Cambodians have Chinese origins, certainly with the flux of Chinese businesses moving in it will soon become a colony! They also celebrate our New Year, certainly, for many years it was a French colony so let’s throw in Christmas too. But the biggest holiday is Khmer New Year. This is when they exchange presents and it last almost a week.

Al rientro, esausta dalle novità e forse dondolata dai sobbalzi del tuk-tuk Reaksa si è addormentata coccolata contro di me. L’abbiamo svegliata quando siamo arrivati a casa di Channa dove ci eravamo incontrati alla mattina. Mr Dom ha montato il cestino su la bici di Dalin mentre noi cercavamo di far mollare un cagnolino dalla figlia di Channa che per amore lo stava torturando come se forse un cagnolino di pezzo.. Con mille grazie mi hanno salutata ed io sono tornata a bordo piscina. / On the return journey, exhausted by new experiences sand maybe by the rocking made by the bumping of the tuk-tuk, Reaksa went sleep cuddled up next to me. We woke her when we arrived at Channas’ house where we ha met in the morning and while Mr Dom fixed the basket onto Reaksas’ bike we ride to get Channa’ daughter to let go of a tiny puppy who out of love she was torturing as if it was a toy dog. They said goodbye with a thousand thanks and I went back to the swimming pool.
