Ancora in strada ma questa volta in tuk-tuk. La prima visita ad un altro futuro poliziotto. Chanry ha 13 anni e come tanti altri e in una classe molto numeroso, 42 studenti. Non ho ancora capito se ci sono pochi aule, pochi insegnati o tanti studenti. Nel nostro sacco magico di vestite, che diminuisce rapidamente, l’abbiamo trovato un “hoody” che li piaceva così tanto che non ha voluto toglierlo. / On the road again but this time in tuk-tuk. Our first visit was to another future policeman. Chanry is 13 years old and like most of the children is in a class with a lot of students, 42 to be precise. I still haven’t understood if this is due to a lack of classrooms, of teachers or many students. Out of our magic bag of clothes, which is rapidly diminishing, we found him a hoody which he liked so much he wouldn’t take it off.

Prossima fermata a casa di Haiv a 14 anni piccolo e sorridente. Era a casa da solo con il fratellini di due anni perché il padre era al mare come pescatore e la madre era andata al mercato a fare la spesa. In tutto ha 4 fratelli , un più grande e tre più piccoli.  Casa tipicamente Cambogiano (mi piacciano e ho anche dormito la prima volta in Cambogia ) ma per fortuna hanno un pozzo per l’acqua ma non so quanto sia pulito, e sono anche attaccati all’elettricità. Pure lui in una classe di 52 studenti. / Next stop at the house of Haiv 14 years old, small and smiling. He was home alone with a two year old brother as his father was at sea as a fisherman and his mother had gone shopping in the market. Typical Cambodia house (I like them and slept in them on my first trip to Cambodia) but they are lucky as they have a well for water but I couldn’t say how clean it is, they are also attached to the electricity. He too is in a class of 52 students.

Per quanto riguarda il sistema scolastica una cosa mi sembra di avere capito: gli anni sono divisi anche in ordine alfabetico. Per esempio il livello 9 può essere 9a, 9b e 9 c.  I studenti in A sono I più bravi e così via. Se non superano gli esami annuali non rimangano indietro di un anno ma vanno in A o B. Anche quando io ero a scuola (tanto tempo fa) in Inghilterra funzionava così. Per esempio io ero in A al in fuori matematica dove ero in B! Questo è quanto ho capito da alcuni studenti ma non trovo conferma in Internet. Vi posso solo dire che il sistema prevede 6 anni nella scuola primaria iniziando da 6 anni. Seguito da 6 anni nella scuola secondaria diviso in due fase prima e seconda. Poi c’è la possibilità di addestramento vocazionale o la università. E nel passaggio da primaria a secondaria che I ragazzi sono più a rischio di lasciare la scuola. Fortunatamente da quando esiste il nostro Centro il numero di ragazzi che abbandonano la scuola e sempre meno ed alcuni dei prime frequentatori sono arrivati al vocational training e l’ultimo anno della secondaria, speriamo che continuano ad andare avanti a università. / With regards to the school system one thing I think I have understood is that the years are are also divided alphabetically. For example grade 9 can be divided into 9a, 9b and 9c. Students in grade a are the best ones and so on going down. If they don’t pass their annual exams they don’t necessarily stay back a year but go from A to B. It worked like that when I was at school in England (many years ago). For example  I was A stream except for maths where I was B!  This is what I have understood from some students but haven’t been able to confirm on Internet. What I can tell you is that the system foresees 6 years in primary school starting from 6 years old. Followed by another 6 years at secondary school divided into two stages of three years each. There is then the possibility of doing vocational tracing or passing on to university. It is in the passage from primary to secondary that the children are more at risk of dropping out of school. Fortunately, since our Center has existed drop-outs have diminished and some of our first children are now at vocational training or in their last year at secondary school, we hope they will continue and go on to university.
