Molto speso mi chiedano quanto e grande il villaggio dove abbiamo il Centro. Ho sempre risposto che più che grande e esteso, che il centro e dove si trova il monastero, la scuola primaria, il piccolo “bar” ed alcuni case. Dopo di che le case sono sparse in mezzo a centinaia di risaia, tutti piccoli, che a volte il riso prodotto non basta per la famiglia per un anno. Molto speso le case si raggiungano in motorini, in bicicletta o nel mio caso a piede, perché qualcosa di più grande non ci passa. Ma quest’anno sono rimasta sbalordita anche io, perché per le visite alle case siamo andati dall’altra parte della strada statale e li si espande ancora di più, c’è un fiume con le barche dove pescano, vedendo l’acqua sono sempre più contenta che il loro pesce secco non mi piace. Channa mi ha azzardato che copre circa 10km. / Very often I am asked how big the village is where our Center is located. I’ve always answered that rather than big it is extensive, that the center is where the monastery, the primary school, the small “bar” and a few houses are. After that the houses are scattered among hundreds of rice fields, some of them so small they don’t provide enough for a family for a whole year. Very often you can only get to the houses on motorbike, bike or,  as in my case, on foot because nothing bigger can pass. But this year even I was astonished, because doing the home visits we passed over to the other side of the main road and there it expands even more. There is a river with fishing boats and seeing the state of the water I’m even more pleased I don’t like their dried fish. Channa hazarded that it covers around 10km.

 Ma oggi la nostra prima visita era dalla nostra parte della strada. Siamo andati a visitare un ragazzo  che conosco bene dall’anno scorso. Già grande per la sua età con un sorriso nello stesso tempo timido ma furbo. Se non fosse per quel sorriso avrei fatto fatica a riconoscerlo. E cresciuto tantissimo ma e sempre timido. Vorrebbe studiare informatica come suo fratello più grande che è già a università. L’avevo conosciuto l’anno scorso, un ragazzo molto intelligente che parla bene l’inglese. Intorno a noi era steso il riso ad asciugare, c’erano già tre sacchi di riso pulito e pronto da cucinare ma e solo per il consumo della famiglia. Sono 3 km alla scuola e come tutti va in bicicletta. Ma dovevo ridere quando me l’ha fatto vedere. Lui è cresciuto talmente tanto in un anno che la bici ormai è un po’ piccoli per lui. Dal sacco magica dei vestiti siamo riusciti a trovare dei bei pantaloni e maglietta. Le ha messo con molto imbarazzo per la foto rituale. / But today our first visit is on our side of the road. We went to visit a  boy I know very well from last year. A tall boy for his age with a smile that at the same time is shy but wicked. If it hadn’t been for that smile I wouldn’t have recognised him. He has grown so much but is still very shy. He would like to study computer programming like his older brother who is already at university. I met him last year, a very intelligent young man who speaks very good English. All around us rice was laid out to dry, three sacks were already cleaned and ready for eating, but only for consumption by the family. It is 3 km to his school and he goes by bike. But I had to laugh when he showed it to me. He has grown so much in the last year that by now it is on the small side for him. From the magic bag we managed to find a pair of trousers and a top for him which he put on with great embarrassment for the ritual photo.

Per la prossima visita abbiamo attraversato ancora la strada per andare da una sorridente ragazza di nome  Sambath che a 15 anni e già un pezzo più grande della madre. Quando siamo arrivati stava mescolando qualcosa che mi sembrava mangime per le galline o maiali ma mi hanno spiegato che era un tipo di croccante con le nocciolini. La sua situazione scolastica non è dei migliori visto che in classe sono in 51. Nel grade 9 e 32esimo nella classe. Ma mi chiedo come si fa insegnare con 51 studenti in classe! Ha 3 fratelli e 3 sorella più grandi ma sono tutti sposati o comunque lontano da casa per lavoro. Per lei abbiamo trovato una bella maglietta con la scritta, in inglese “farò errori migliori domani” ! / For the following visit we crossed the road again to see a smiling young lady called Sambath who at 16 is already taller than her mother. When we arrived she was mixing something that looked to me  like chicken or pig food but I was informed it was for making crunchy biscuits with peanuts. Her school situation is not perfectas there are 51 students in her class. She is in grade 9 and in 32 nd place. But, I ask myself how can you teach to a class of 51 students! She has 3 brothers and 3 sisters but they are all married or working away from home. For her we found a nice top with the writing “I will make better mistakes tomorrow”!

L’ultimo visita era quasi davanti il Centro infatti a questo punto abbiamo lasciato libero il paziente Mr Dom. Il studente era Ho Hovheng un altro ragazzone di 15 anni che vorrebbe diventare ingegneri, non sarebbe male se iniziasse con la strada che passa davanti a casa sua che è quello dove stanno passando tutti I camion con il terreno scavato di una “montagna” vicino, tutto materiale di costruzione. Certo e inutile costruire la strada finché vanno avanti e indietro I camion ad una rata di circa 80 al giorno. La povera madre ha cercato di spolverare sedie per noi ma con un camion ogni 5 minuti eravamo continuamente coperte di polvere. / The final visit was almost in front of the Center so at this point we let the patient Mr Dom go home. Our students name is Ho Hovheng another big boy of 15 years old who would like to become and engineer, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if he starts on the road that passes in front of his house, the one all the lorries are passing on with earth dug from a nearby “mountain”, all of it building material. Certainly it would be useless to build a road while lorries are passing at a rate of about 80 a day. His poor mother tried to dust down some chairs for us but with lorries passing every 5 minutes we were continually covered in dust.

Nella prima classe del pomeriggio mi sono permesso di fare un piccolo cambiamento. Kimheap fa la sua lezione dal libro della scuola statale poi io aggiungo altre parole della medesima soggetto presi da un libro che ho comperato a Phnom Penh e fatto fotocopiare qui a Kep. Una volta scritto le parole in inglese con la traduzione Khmer che naturalmente faccio scrivere da Kimheap facciamo delle prove di lettura. Poi consegno la fotocopia e possano colorare gli oggetti che fanno riferimento alle parole, così per alleggerire la lezione. Ma poi, devano girare il foglio che ho furbamente piegato in due e fare un piccolissimo cruciverba usando I disegni come indizi. Severamente vietato girare il foglio, ma se sono più furbi di me le parole sono ancora scritte su la lavagna. E sono furbi. Alcuni hanno sbagliato solo il primo giorno. Per renderlo più interessante ho dato a tutti un foglio da raccoglitore in plastica per tenerli. Ogni giorno li mettano via con cura. / In the first afternoon class I have permitted myself to make a small change. Kimheap starts her lesson from the state school book then I add other words about the same subject taken from a book I bought in Phnom Penh and photocopied here in Kep. Once they have written the words in English with the Khmer translation which I get Kimheap to write we have a reading test. I then give out the photocopies and they can colour in the pictures referring to the words, just a little light relief. But then they have to turn the page over, which I have craftily folded in two and do a very small crossword using the pictures as clues. Severely forbidden to turn the page over, but if they are bright enough the words are still written on the white board, and they are bright. Only a few made mistakes on the first day. To make it more interesting I gave them all a plastic binder page to keep them in. Every day they put them there with care.

Durante la pausa le ragazze sono venuti fuori con un enorme sacchetto contenente filo colorato e si sono messi in bella compagnia a fare I tradizionali braccialetti. Il loro metodi di trattenere l’inizio del filo e molto inventivo. Chi su un dito del piede, la maggioranza al recinto ma qualcuno ad una bottiglia. Non funziona la bottiglia  continua a cadere. / During the break the girls came out with a big bag of coloured thread and set to in merry company to make the traditional bracelets. Their methods of holding firm the beginning of the thread is very inventive. Some on a toe, the majority on the fence, but somebody on a bottle. It didn’t work the bottle continued to fall over.

Alla fine della giornata I ragazzi più grandi sono tutti uscite di corsa per tornare indietro portando pali di legno di vari grandezze e lunghezze. Materiale per la costruzione dell’aula provvisoria. A vedere le foto potrebbe sembrare che siamo schiavisti ma questi ragazzi adorano fare questi lavori, guai a non chiederli. Sono molto orgoglioso del loro Centro e curano tutto la manutenzione e pulizie dove possibile per loro. / At the end of the day the bigger children go racing out to come back carrying wooden poles of different sizes and lengths. Material for the construction of the new temporary classroom. To look at the photos one would think we are using child slave labour but theses kids love doing this sort of work, unthinkable not to ask them. They are very proud of their Center and look after it with maintenance and cleaning where possible for them.
