Sokkea è già sveglio da un pezzo quando arrivo a fare colazione. E’ dall’altra parte dell’isola e mi invita a raggiungerlo. Appena terminata la colazione mi incammino lungo il sentiero di cemento che corre lungo Sandy Beach e poi sale a sinistra sulla piccola collina che separa i due versanti dell’isola. / Sokkea has already been awake for a while when I arrive for breakfast. He’s on the other side of the island and invites me to join him. As soon as I’m done with breakfast, I walk down the concrete path that runs along Sandy Beach and then up the small hill to the left that separates the two sides of the island.

Il caldo è davvero micidiale e nonostante il percorso sia breve, non più di 1 chilometro, inizio a sudare come una fontanella. Lungo il percorso incrocio un ragazzone americano che mi saluta “Hello Franco, how are you”. “How do you know my name” “Come fai a sapere il mio nome?”. Opera di Sokkea che ha già pubblicizzato anche qui la mia presenza. Lui è un imprenditore americano che si sta prendendo una pausa qui, tra un affare e l’altro in Cambogia, con la sua compagna vietnamita. Mi fa i complimenti per i due orologi, un Omega Sea Master e un Rolex rigorosamente originali comprati a P’saa Tuol Tompoung il Russian Market di Phnom Penh, che porto al polso. “Begli orologi. Ne ho una collezione a casa. Valgono un sacco di soldi”. Non diciamogli che arrivano da P’saa Tuol Tompoung. “Come mai due orologi?” “Uno sul fuso orario dell’Italia, il Rolex che porto al polso sinistro, e uno sul fuso orario di qui, l’Omega che porto al polso destro”. “Buona vacanza”. / The heat is really stifling and despite the fact that the path is short, no more than 1 km, I start to sweat like a fountain. He is an American entrepreneur who is taking a break here, between business deals in Cambodia, with his Vietnamese lady partner. He compliments me on the two watches, an Omega Sea Master and a strictly original Rolex bought at P’saa Tuol Tompoung the Russian Market in Phnom Penh, that I wear on my wrist. “Beautiful watches. Arrivo sull’altro lato dell’isola, dopo una vertiginosa discesa lungo una ripidissima scalinata. Sokkea è seduto sul molo a parlare con un pescatore. Di fronte si vede a poca distanza l’isola principale di Koh Rong. Davvero uno spettacolo notevole. / I arrive on the other side of the island, after a dizzying descent down a very steep flight of steps. Sokkea is sitting on the pier talking to a fisherman. Alle 12 abbiamo già la barca per il rientro a Sihanoukville, che da Koh Rong Saleoum si intravede all’orizzonte. Lungo la via del ritorno ci fermiamo in un piccolo barettino a prendere un passion fruit shake. / At 12 noon we already have the boat for the return to Sihanoukville, which can be seen on the horizon from Koh Rong Saleoum. Mentre arriviamo al ristorante del resort ci ferma uno dei ragazzi dello staff e ci comunica che l’orario della barca per il ritorno è stato anticipato di un’ora. Le condizioni atmosferiche non sono stabili e non vogliono prendersi rischi di rimanere bloccati sull’isola. Infatti ieri notte da qui si vedevano grossi temporali sulla costa di Sihanoukville. / As we arrive at the resort restaurant, one of the staff members stops us and tells us that the boat time for the return trip has been anticipated an hour. The weather conditions are not stable and they don’t want to take the risk of being stranded on the island. In fact last night from here we could see big thunderstorms on the coast of Sihanoukville.

Ci imbarchiamo alle 11 circa. Prima si va a recuperare i passeggeri a Koh Rong, che così abbiamo occasione almeno di vedere dal molo, e poi via a piena velocità verso Sihanoukville. Le onde sballottano la speedboat e almeno un paio di volte rischiamo di cappottare. All’interno siamo sballottati ben benino. Quasi come sulla strada da Kampot a Sihanoukville il giorno prima. / We embark at about 11am. First we go to Koh Rong to pick up the passengers, so we have a chance to see the island from the pier, and then we speed off towards Sihanoukville. The waves toss the speedboat around and at least a couple of times we risk capsizing. Inside the boat we are tossed around quite a bit. Almost like on the road from Kampot to Sihanoukville the day before.

30 minuti e siamo a destinazione. Fa un caldo bestiale. Al porto troviamo un folto gruppo di militari della Marina Militare Reale di Cambogia, elegantissimi nelle loro divise bianche. Facciamo qualche foto e loro salutano sorridendo e con il pollice alzato. / 30 minutes and we are at our destination. It’s hot as hell. At the port we find a large group of soldiers from the Royal Navy of Cambodia, very elegant in their white uniforms. We take a few photos and they salute us with a smile and a thumbs up.

Il nostro taxi ci preleva all’interno del porto. Altre tre ore e mezza e siamo a destinazione a Kampot. Io preferisco rimanere a Kampot a fare un po’ di commissioni e sistemare le mie cose. Sokkea si fa accompagnare dall’autista al nostro centro di Domnak Chamboak, dove sono arrivati anche gli amici di sempre Solida, Mr. Yoeourn e Piseth. Gli amici che sono parte di Shade for Children dall’inizio di questa avventura e che hanno sostenuto il progetto ad integrazione dei nostri interventi come A Smile for Cambodia Onlus. / Our taxi cab picks us up inside the port. Another three and a half hours and we are at our destination in Kampot. I prefer to stay in Kampot to run a few errands and get my things in order. Sokkea has the driver drop him off at our Domnak Chamboak center, where his lifelong friends Solida, Mr. Yoeourn and Piseth have also arrived. The friends who have been part of Shade for Children since the beginning of this adventure and who have supported the project in addition to our interventions as A Smile for Cambodia Onlus.

A cena ci ritroviamo tutti. E’ davvero un piacere per me reincontrare Mr. Yoeourn e la moglie con il figlioletto, carinissimo. Davvero un piacere finalmente poter conoscere Solida, di cui ho tanto sentito parlare ma che non avevo ancora incontrato di persona. Piseth lo incontrerò domani al Centro. / At dinner we all meet again. It’s really a pleasure for me to meet again Mr. Yoeourn and his wife with their little son, very cute. Tutto è pronto a Domnak Chamboak, per la cerimonia ufficiale di inaugurazione di domani. 200 bambini, 60 genitori, tutto lo staff e tutte le autorità locali; il capo del villaggio, della comune, del distretto e la presidente del City Council di Kep, che verrà dietro autorizzazione del governatore della provincia. Sarà un passaggio davvero importante per il nostro progetto. Un evento a lungo atteso, in attesa del mio arrivo in Cambogia, e che segnerà sicuramente una nuova fase nella vita del progetto qui nella provincia di Kep. / Everything is ready in Domnak Chamboak, for the official opening ceremony tomorrow. 200 children, 60 parents, all the staff and all the local authorities; the head of the village, of the municipality, of the district and the president of the City Council of Kep, who will come with the authorization of the governor of the province. It will be a very important step for our project. A long awaited event, waiting for my arrival in Cambodia, and that will surely mark a new phase in the life of the project here in Kep province.
