L’attività della nostra associazione è partita immediatamente dopo la fondazione il 2 maggio 2011. L’esperienza fatta sin dal 2007 dal nostro Presidente Franco Farao, con l’adozione del primo figlio (Nhak) in Cambogia, fu elemento essenziale innanzitutto per la nascita di progetti individuali di supporto delle iniziative di altre Organizzazioni Non Profit in Cambogia quali i progetti di Cifa ONG/Respect for Children NGO a Neak Loeung e Via del Campo a Sihanoukville, di Ida Onlus a Phnom Penh con la produzione di gioielli dal metallo delle mine antiuomo, di Happy Tree ONG con l’orfanotrofio di Happyland nella provincia di Kandal, appena fuori Phnom Penh (orfanotrofio dove si trovava anche Saem, sorella di Nhak e futura figlia del Presidente e della moglie Egidia). / The activity of our association started immediately after its foundation on May 2, 2011. The experience made since 2007 by our President Franco Farao, with the adoption of his first child (Nhak) in Cambodia, was an essential element first of all for the start of individual projects to support the initiatives of other Non Profit Organizations in Cambodia such as the projects of Cifa ONG/Respect for Children NGO in Neak Loeung and Via del Campo in Sihanoukville, Ida Onlus in Phnom Penh with the production of jewelry from the metal of landmines, Happy Tree NGO with Happyland orphanage in the province of Kandal, just outside Phnom Penh (orphanage where was also Saem, Nhak’s sister and future daughter of the President and his wife Egidia).

L’idea del Presidente era quella di restituire al Paese che aveva donato un figlio alla famiglia, una piccola parte della gioia e della felicità che quel figlio aveva portato nella sua vita. / The President’s idea was to give back to the country that had given a son to the family, a small part of the joy and happiness that son had brought into his life.

Sin dal 2009, per fare fundraising per i progetti individuati, venne lanciato l’evento Io Disegno per la Cambogia, divenuto poi evento ricorrente della nostra associazione. / Since 2009, in order to do fundraising for the projects identified, the event Io Disegno per la Cambogia (I draw for Cambodia) was launched, which then became a recurring event of our association.

Nel marzo 2013 fu avviato, su proposta dell’attuale Project Manager Chin Sokkea, il progetto nel villaggio di Domnak Chamboak, nella provincia di Kep, nel sudovest della Cambogia, al confine con il Vietnam e il Golfo di Thailandia. Nel marzo del 2013 ci fu il primo contatto di Sokkea con un gruppo di 50 bambini che ogni weekend studiavano inglese, guidati da un volontario (poi divenuto parte del nostro staff) sotto un albero di mango di fronte alla pagoda di Phnom Sorsea, nelle campagne della provincia di Kep. / In March 2013 the project was started, on proposal of the current Project Manager Chin Sokkea, in the village of Domnak Chamboak, in the province of Kep, in the south-west of Cambodia, on the border with Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand. In March 2013 there was the first contact of Sokkea with a group of 50 children who studied English every weekend, led by a volunteer (later became part of our staff) under a mango tree in front of the pagoda of Phnom Sorsea, in the countryside of Kep province.

A giugno, in occasione dell’International Children’s Day, che in Cambogia si celebra ogni anno il 1 giugno, venne effettuata la prima distribuzione di materiali scolastici ai bambini e beni di supporto alle loro famiglie. Nel frattempo la notizia del progetto aveva già preso piede nel villaggio e i nostri amici cambogiani, al loro arrivo a Domnak Chamboak, trovarono circa 190 bambini e le loro famiglie ad accoglierli. / In June, on the occasion of the International Children’s Day, celebrated every year on June 1 in Cambodia, the first distribution of school supplies to children and support goods to their families was made. In the meantime, news of the project had already spread through the village and our Cambodian friends, upon arrival in Domnak Chamboak, found about 190 children and their families to welcome them.

Furono avviati colloqui con il capo villaggio e i monaci della pagoda di Phnom Sorsea. I monaci avevano dato la loro disponibilità a mettere a disposizione del progetto alcuni edifici dismessi che si trovavano sulla collina a ridosso della pagoda. Il notevole aumento del numero di bambini spinse Sokkea e il Presidente a fare partire il programma di Sostegni a Distanza (SAD). Per gestire il progetto fu costituita la non profit di diritto cambogiano, Shade for Children NGO (nome derivato dagli albori del progetto quando i bambini studiavano sotto l’albero di mango di fronte alla pagoda), di cui fu nominato Executive Director Chin Sokkea. / Talks were held with the village chief and the monks of Phnom Sorsea pagoda. The monks had agreed to make available for the project some disused buildings on the hillside near the pagoda. The significant increase in the number of children prompted Sokkea and the president to initiate the Distant Adoption Program (DAP). To manage the project, a Cambodian-registered nonprofit, Shade for Children NGO (a name derived from the project’s early days when children were studying under the mango tree in front of the pagoda), was formed and Chin Sokkea was appointed Executive Director.

L’idea di utilizzare i locali messi a disposizione dalla pagoda di Phnom Sorsea, fu presto accantonata, sia per lo stato di pessima manutenzione degli immobili, sia per la loro collocazione sulla collina, che ne rendeva non agevole l’accesso e la fruizione. Venne così affittata una proprietà di circa 1.000 mq con una casa da ristrutturare, collocata sulla strada di accesso al villaggio. In pochi mesi, tra agosto e dicembre 2013 l’immobile fu ristrutturato e fu aggiunta una tettoia esterna in modo da aggiungere un’aula esterna a quella collocata all’interno della casa. A quel tempo lo staff era costituito da tre giovani insegnanti e da volontari che arrivavano dall’Italia e dalla Cambogia. / The idea of using the premises made available by the pagoda of Phnom Sorsea, was soon set aside, both for the poor state of maintenance of the buildings, and for their location on the hill, which made access and use difficult. So a property of about 1,000 square meters was rented with a house to be renovated, located on the access road to the village. In a few months, between August and December 2013, the property was renovated and an external roof was added in order to add an outdoor classroom to the one located inside the house. At that time the staff consisted of three young teachers and volunteers coming from Italy and Cambodia.

A gennaio 2014, durante la prima missione del Presidente a Domnak Chamboak, fu deciso l’acquisto e sottoscritto il preliminare di acquisizione di una proprietà di 1.200 mq e della sovrastante abitazione (cuore storico dell’attuale sede del nostro Centro Diurno), con un investimento di 14.000 usd. Il Presidente e i volontari Stefania Bertarini e Daniele Romano tornarono quindi in Italia con la missione di raccogliere quanto necessario per l’acquisto. Furono mobilitati amici e parenti, colleghi e conoscenti e dopo un tour de force di raccolta fondi, in aprile 2014 fu finalizzato l’acquisto e partirono i lavori di ristrutturazione e costruzione delle aule per l’insegnamento agli oltre 100 bambini che ogni giorno già frequentavano il nostro Centro. / In January 2014, during the first mission of the President in Domnak Chamboak, the purchase was decided and signed the preliminary purchase of a property of 1,200 square meters and the house above (the historical heart of the current headquarters of our Day Care Center), with an investment of 14,000 usd. Friends and relatives, colleagues and acquaintances were mobilized and after a tour de force of fundraising, in April 2014 the purchase was finalized and the work of renovation and construction of classrooms for teaching more than 100 children who attended our Center every day began.

Da gennaio 2015 tutte le attività del nostro Centro Diurno e del progetto SAD furono spostate nella nuova sede, in mezzo alle risaie del villaggio, 100 m. all’interno della strada che collega il villaggio con la statale che porta da Kep a Kampot. / Since January 2015 all the activities of our Day Center and DAP project were moved to the new location, in the middle of the rice fields of the village, 100 m. inside the road that connects the village with the highway leading from Kep to Kampot.

Ormai sono passati oltre 8 anni dall’avvio del nostro progetto a Kep e la nostra realtà è ormai consolidata e conosciuta sul territorio. Nel 2019/2020 è stato realizzato l’ampliamento, con la costruzione di un secondo edificio che ospita 4 nuove aule di insegnamento. / It has now been over 8 years since the start of our project in Kep and our reality is now consolidated and known in the area. In 2019/2020 the expansion has been realized, with the construction of a second building that houses 4 new classrooms of teaching.

In questi anni ci sono state missioni periodiche da parte del Presidente Franco Farao e del Consigliere Jane Hartley presso il nostro Centro Diurno di Domnak Chamboak. Missioni di insegnamento della lingua inglese ai bambini e di monitoraggio del progetto. L’ultima missione, svolta nei mesi di febbraio e marzo 2020, da parte del Consigliere Jane Hartley e della nostra associata Fernanda Elli, ha accompagnato l’avvio dei lavori di costruzione del nuovo edificio. Dopo una sosta forzata nel 2021, a causa del blocco dei visti per la Cambogia e delle limitazioni poste dalle autorità cambogiane all’ingresso nel Paese, contiamo di essere in grado di ritornare alle nostre missioni annuali nel corso del 2022. / During these years there have been periodic missions by President Franco Farao and Board member Jane Hartley to our Day Care Center in Domnak Chamboak. Missions to teach English to the children and to monitor the project. The last mission, carried out in February and March 2020, by Board member Jane Hartley and our associate Fernanda Elli, accompanied the start of construction work on the new building. After a forced stop in 2021, due to the Cambodia visa freeze and restrictions placed by Cambodian authorities on entry into the country, we expect to be able to return to our annual missions during 2022.

Il Centro nel periodo tra marzo 2020 e ottobre 2021 ha funzionato a periodi alternati, di pari passo con le chiusure delle scuole, a causa della pandemia Covid 19. / The Center during the period between March 2020 and October 2021 operated at alternating times, hand-in-hand with school closures, due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

I bambini che supportiamo a Domnak Chamboak sono oltre 190. Tanti dei bimbi che abbiamo conosciuto da piccoli nel 2013 hanno raggiunto o stanno raggiungendo la maggiore età e sono stati avviati o si stanno avviando alle attività lavorative e di studio universitario. Alcuni li abbiamo persi nel percorso o perchè si allontanavano dalla nostra area o perchè dovevano andare a lavorare per aiutare la famiglia (soprattutto nella fascia di età tra i 15 e i 18 anni). Ma tanti li stiamo vedendo arrivare alla fine del loro percosro di studi della high school, obiettivo primario della nostra opera di scolarizzazione e supporto. E tanti si stanno anche incamminando verso l’università a coronamento degli sforzi di tutti per sostenerli nello studio. / The children we support at Domnak Chamboak number over 190. So many of the children we met as children in 2013 have reached or are reaching the age of majority and have started or are starting work and university studies. Some we lost along the way either because they moved away from our area or because they had to go to work to help their families (especially in the 15-18 age group). But many we are seeing come to the end of their high school journey, the primary focus of our schooling and support work. And many are also on their way to university to crown the efforts of all to support them in their studies.

In parallelo a tutto questo, che rappresenta il cuore delle nostre attività, in Italia venivano sviluppati progetti con le scuole, raccolte di materiale scolastico in collaborazione con Coop Lombardia e l’Istituto Italiano di Donazione, la distribuzione dei materiali ad asili, scuole e doposcuola sul nostro territorio, progetti di sostegno di famiglie single parent con l’iniziativa “adotta una famiglia” in collaborazione con i servizi sociali di Mariano Comense e con il sostegno di Iperal Supermercati, sostegno alle situazioni di difficoltà di scuole nei territori colpiti dal sisma nelle Marche nel 2016-2017. / In parallel to all this, which represents the heart of our activities, in Italy projects were developed with schools, collections of school supplies in collaboration with Coop Lombardia and the Italian Institute of Donation, distribution of materials to kindergartens, schools and after-school programs on our territory, projects to support single parent families with the initiative “adopt a family” in collaboration with the social services of Mariano Comense and with the support of Iperal Supermarkets, support to difficult situations of schools in the territories affected by the earthquake in the Marche in 2016-2017.

Il 2 maggio 2021 si è festeggiato il decennale della nostra associazione, un po’ in sordina a causa della persistente situazione di pandemia, ma con la coscienza che tanto abbiamo fatto in questi anni, ma altrettanto e di più rimane da fare negli anni a venire. / On May 2, 2021 we celebrated the tenth anniversary of our association, a little quietly because of the persistent situation of pandemic, but with the awareness that we have done so much in recent years, but as much and more remains to be done in the years to come.
